Skype 3.0 Beta for Windows Mobile
For those of you reading this in an RSS reader, you can watch the video here. You can also grab the embed code if you want to use this video in your own blog.
Just over a month ago, I mentioned on this blog that we were gearing up to launch Skype 3.0 Beta for Windows Phones , and now it’s ready for you to download and try out.
It includes two great new features: SMS and file transfer. With 3.0 Beta, you can send text messages from your phone at Skype’s low rates, and send and receive files with your Skype contacts around the world – John Nguyen explains all in the video above.
File transfer in Skype 3.0 Beta for Windows Phones
Now that Skype for Windows Mobile supports file transfer, you can send and receive documents on the move. Need to do an impromptu presentation to a potential client? Have a colleague send that 50Mb PowerPoint document straight from the office. Made some edits and want to back it up? Send it back again.
Of course, Skype-to-Skype file transfers are secure and private, so you can send sensitive documents in the knowledge that they’re safe from prying eyes, even across unsecured WiFi networks.
SMS in Skype 3.0 Beta for Windows Phones
When you’re abroad and in a WiFi zone, the SMS feature is a great way to avoid mobile roaming charges – you pay only Skype’s low SMS rates to send messages to friends and family. Of course, roaming charges may apply if you’re connecting to Skype using a 3G network, so check with your operator before doing so.
Of course, even when you’re at home, the SMS feature in 3.0 Beta is a great way to reach friends and family instantly anywhere in the world – and Skype’s low rates mean that you won’t have to break the bank to do it.
And more…
We’ve also spruced up the user interface, and combined Pocket PC and Smartphone apps into a single download – so head over and give it a try ![]()
Hi,
I am really Happy to see skype mobile getting better and better with these new features. I’ve tested sms and it’s working really great on my touch pro.
File transfer is good too but searching files on the pocket PC is not easy, a windows explorer like would be better.
keep on your great work guys,
I hope that your next big feature will be video next time
Regards
A big fan
Skype calls on my Motorola Q9h, connected full bars 3G is horrible. I have been waiting for an update that will improve on this. Why do skype winmo clients like iSkoot have better voice calls than the originators?
Just downloaded the software and i must say I am happier with the sound quality, I am a little perplexed as to why you guys have not solved the bluetooth issue in this update. From what I saw you had a number of pretty dissapointed folks with this issue in 2.5 Please let me know if i have missed something in this regard.
Hi, i am using an htc touch hd and i feel that the sound quality needs a little improvement. Also it would be good if i could use my bluetooth handsfree with skype mobile.
This beta will mess up your SMS settings in skype. All verified mobile phones will become unverified. I’d wait for a more bug-free version …
@yours_genesys whoops – that’s clearly not meant to happen. If you have any more detail which you think would help us fix things, please get in touch.
Hello,
I just saw Skype for Iphone video. I am so jealous, what a great User interface !!!
Why can’t we have this interface on our windows mobile phones?
Please
Can we get also skype lite-ish option of making a call in 3g/wifi absent environment? That would be really cool, but of course you should make sure that we don’t end up being charged if we are still in 3g/wifi enabled area!
Thanks for the great app!!
hi i have put skype on my phone and it look good but when i try to make a call the software crashes and i have to turn my phone off. is there any fixes for this are am i doing some thing wrong thak you
@carlgw74 thanks for the feedback – it’s a beta version so there may be a few glitches here and there. Which phone are you using?
Hello everyone, I was wondering why Skype has the option “Use ActiveSync, Wi-Fi and Mobile” is only one works?
I tried using ActiveSync and it didn’t connect and when I go 3G or H it keeps saying that it can’t connect…
If anything I would like to make a feature request…
Add a simple line of code just like in the desktop version that allows users to change the default connection port.
If not then just tell us how we can do this… I can’t believe that Skype has been working for years with Microsoft and Windows Mobile and you guys make a more easy to use/change version for the iPhone.
I hope you know that there’s more Windows Mobile Users World-wide than iPhone users, there for you should give us better UI and more Options on how to use the software.
As for my 3G networking, what can I do while you guys thinks if it’s a good idea to keep customers or someone else makes the same service with more options?

@dannymcguire117 are you able to browse the web over 3G?
Great release indeed, but if, as someone said above, the issue of incorporating the BT headset support is not yet resolved, it’s another disappointment then.
I am a Skype loyal of Skype for PC. I tried the beta and Skype 2.5 for my HTC Touch and found that Skype has a lot of work to do. I used it for a month and gave up on it mainly due to:
- Absence of cellular dialing
- Absence of audio routing
- Buggy/Crashes/Hangs
- Audio quality is very very average
- Plenty of call drops
The quality issues are not present in my PC which uses the same WiFi connection.
I have now switched over to Fring which solves all the above problems. Until Skype solves these I am sorry, you have lost one customer!

You should try the gold version which includes a number of bug fixes

I’m getting intermittent sound on the test call with an XDAIIi which has an
Intel Xscale PXA272 (520 MHz)
128 MB SDRAM, 128 MB ROM
Can you let me know what the minimum spec is for skype 3.0 windows mobile to work correctly.
Thanks

If I use skype to call a cell phone will the cell phone account get charged anything?
Skype is only using my Speaker Phone on my HTC Touch Pro2, which prevents me from using Skype Mobile.
Hi guys, is there one yet for HTC Touch running Windows Mobile 6.1? Please let me know. Thank you.
Hi Guys,
Can somebody provide link for downloading beta version for windows mobile?
My cell is HTC Touch Viva T2223.
Thanks
We know that you have withdrawn the WM version because you want to force iOS and Android… someone pays you to do it. But you are well aware that Android will die soon and WM will prevail because Android is not an OS, it’s just an Java emulation that requires double the hardware than WM for the same software. You know it and that is why you don’t admit it publicly and cover it with “we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience” … soon we will have our good version… you will have to!
