[Fixed] Problem with the latest Skype 4.0 for Windows release
Unfortunately a previously unknown bug sneaked into Skype 4.0.0.215 for Windows, released this Wednesday, with it not including the Skype Extras Manager (which handles third party add-on applications for Skype).
To workaround this problem, download the full installer for Skype 4.0.0.215 for Windows.
We’re sorry for any mischief the gremlins caused – we’re working on the next release which will fix this problem.

This issue has been fixed in Skype 4.0.0.216 for Windows
Since I downloaded the latest version of Skype, I too am having the same problem with the Disk I/O error. This is really frustrating and annoying. I still can’t log in. Please help.
Upgrade to ver 226 is a disaster; persistent disk i/o error, and can’t proceed. Running XP SP2 and latest Firefox. 2 Skype versions back worked fine, so why have Skype stuffed it up? and why hasn’t tech support fixed a problem which has been driving customers nuts now for at least 10 days? Does tech support read any of this stuff?
Same problem as everyone… can’t reinstall Skype, can’t uninstall it to reinstall… I have a great working quite new computer with Vista… Skype code just says 1603…
I then tried what some geeks above posted. I know computers well, and got nowhere using their “remedies”, all the recommendations above are a waste of time, believe me.
Went to a party last nite … surprise: everyone with Skype at the party has same exact problem at this local party of europeans living in US (a micro example of what is going on around the world currently with Skype perhaps)…
All said they get no phone answer to this problem from Skype, so are currently just spending money on the many various competitors until Skype finds the answer (including me, I have just credit carded funds to a new account at a very good Skype competitor)… I am sure Skype will soon post a remedy that works.
I don’t want to name competitors, not fair to Skype who was really good till this …perhaps a bug started by a competitor… must be costing Skype millions in revenue daily… I called Skype they so far have no answer to this strange problem… if they did they would post it here…
If the Skype folks are reading this, you really need to solve this one, it is costing you a lot of money by the hour.

After I posted the above comment (just above) I once again tried to download the latest “4.0 Hotfix”, for the forth time, and tried some of the latest “remedies” … all a waste of time… same error 1603…

We have been trying to get Skype to work, but keep getting “disk I/O error” message. We have tried everything suggested in the service/help answers to no avail. We’ve heard good things about Skype and using a camera, etc. and can’t wait til we can talk/see with our grandchildren.
Please help!

It seems a lot of us are having the same problem. I had a message to download the latest version when I logged on today. I wished that I hadn’t!! All I get is the “Disk I/O error” etc. I want to see my daughter who is working in Afghanistan but now I cannot. Can anybody help? I’ve tried all the things from the help pages & this blog but to no avail! HHHHHEEEEELLLLPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring back the old version – if it wasn’t broken why try & fix it????
Obviously our messages are just going out into the “Blue Nowhere”!! Someone, somewhere is losing Skype bucket loads of income!!
Much the same as Sarah above – out with the new & in with the old. I have just gone onto main Skype website as if to download new version & there is an option to download a previous version!! It works!! Hope this helps some of you.
We have been trying to get Skype to work, but keep getting “disk I/O error” message. We have tried everything suggested in the service/help answers to no avail. I can not use my phone for business, at all please help!
Regarding my request from April 23, 2009, for a
solution, I decided to return to the OLDER
version of “Skype.”
I kept my copy, but it appears that others may
use a link to it at the bottom of the following
“Skype” website page, and it may help others who
are still challenged, too:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/windows/
The link is found at the end of “Skype’s” statement:
“Accessibility features for people with
disabilities are not yet available in this
release. If you require them, we recommend
that you use the previous version of Skype.
Maybe we can help each other with solutions
until “Skype” can resolve these problems.

PS. This is regarding my post from April 23rd:
“In Version 4.0.0.224 (the newest version), I want to be able to delete history items as I was able to do in your previous Version 3.8.0.180. It appears that I’m not the only one who has had this problem as indicated by the info posted on March 18th–over a month ago….
Chase”
NOTE: REGARDING MY PREVIOUS POST OF TODAY:
Before installing the older version of “Skype,”
be sure to uninstall ALL of the newer version
OR it will not work properly.
(I knew better but didn’t uninstall everything
my first time.)
I used the “Add or Remove Programs” feature of
Windows, and when asked if I wanted to save my
history items, I indicated that I do–no problems
after that.
Hopefully, this will benefit someone else.

On this topic I have also posted in the Archives (april) under “skype 4 for win hotfix”. Using oldapps.com, I first installed old ver 3.something over the top of 226. this worked fine, so i then shifted up to 4.0.0.xxx as per postbelow:-
[[Don from OZ again; Moved back up to 4.0.0.216 and that is working OK (so far); it's running on both a HP Pavilion laptop (XPpro SP2) and Dell GX280 desktop (same OS); i'm leaving it like that till we get to hear from the Skype techos that they even know there is still a prob with ver 226 re disk i/o error, and that they have got a hot fix. There are too many places where one might need to post to get something like this brought to their attention. No feedback (yet)]].
Having downloaded the install file, I unplugged the internet, closed running apps, and ran the install without uninstalling the ver 3 i had gone back to. Although i haven’t done any hard testing, it appears to work just as well as it did previously. You might like to try doing the same in the interim.
skype 4,o.o215 is still freezing my webcam,it also is screwing with my computer.so I’m removing skype again.hopefuly it has not done to much damage to my computer.
When trying to download new version, I lost my old version and can’t download the new version because it says there are errors…so now I don’t have Skype at ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLll…………….Flippin ridiculous.
I am having this same error 1603 while trying to uninstall Skype. I get this oter message to “find Skype.msi” / cannot remove old copy of 4.1.
Please help.
I am also having this problem, has anyone found a solution?
I have skype 4.0 and skype extra manager stopped working, I am fed up with skype, they want you to join, but do not direct you to fix a problem
I already have skype 4.1 full installer, still not working
Any news on this problem? Windows Vista professional and Skype 4.1, no way it works with external webcam
i get the 1603 error thing too
it installs, then it just says it couldnt do something (i forgot) and then it closes!
except i think thats just because i may have a virus thats in the ‘Windows’ files… and bitdefender cant seem to get rid of it..
cmon skype, get a move on.
Can you please explain how I can download Skype when every time I try, it says “we are having problems connecting to the download server”? Even when I try to download the full installer I get the exact same message. How am I supposed to make this work???
I downloaded the latest version and now it won’t sign in. I have the same problem with Messenger and its latest version. Really really irritating. Any ideas? All the problem solving ideas from Skype don’t work and I really need my messenger and skype. Thanks

Skype keeps disappearing from my compuyer when I try to write something to anyone!!!
I don’t know if anyone else has had the same problem, but my installs and opens fine, but crashes every time it tries to send a message/start a call/it sometimes crashes just without me doing anything to it at all. [N.B. By 'crash' I mean it comes up with the standard Windows Vista error message saying 'Skype has stopped working'.]
Hi, I am having the same exact problem. If I go back to a system restorepoint on Saturday skype works fine. but after that, it fails. Are any of the Skype tech guys reading this??? We could use some help I think.
Hi, I red some other posts that seemed to deal with the same problem. If you are running Threatfire (a very good program) you are going to want to uninstall it. It seems to have a problem with skype right now. I uninstalled it 10 minutes agao and now everything is running fine.
When I go online with Skype it disconnects my internet connection. I am using version 4.1.0.179 with Win XP Pro. When using version 3.6.0.248 there are no problems. Why? Des

I found a solution to get around the 1603 error during installation.
When prompted to install Skype, there is an ‘Option’ button. I clicked it and unselected most of the options like Skype Extras and Skype extensions for Firefox. Then it installed perfectly with no problems.

I am unable to download Skype new version. The older version I have downloaded on my computer, but when I run it, I get the message new upgrade is available and then I am not able to install even the old version. Download stops after I reach 1.5 MB mark and even in full installer, it stops downloading after 20 MB mark. Please guide me what to do because I need Skype urgently to continue working on my assignments. Please help me out.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am running Skype in XP through Bootcamp on my iMac. I just wasted 3 days reformatting, reloading, searching for Bootcamp updates, searching for Skype updates, trying differing loading sequences and then I saw your web-note in Google. I tried the complete download and “Poof!” everything works! This should be at the top of the list in Google and it would save hundreds (Or more) of man hours!
I am using an iMac with OS X 6.2 with all of the most recent updates installed and Skype v2.8. In addition, I am also using Boot Camp with a recent version of XP and all of the recent updates with the Skype v4.0.0.215 listed above. This update worked great for a week or so after I installed it but yesterday, when I installed a new update for Boot Camp (32 Bit), when I connect on Skype, no one can see me. The same problem exists in both versions 2.8 for Mac and 4.0.0.215 for XP. My video camera is still working, and I can see incoming video, but Skype doesn’t recognize my iSight camera. During a call, it keeps “Searching for video camera”.
I have deleted and reinstalled both Skype versions, re-installed driver packs from the original startup discs for both OS X and XP, removed all vestiges of Skype from my computer using “Search”, and done a clean install using version 4.0.0.215. It still doesn’t recognize the iSight video camera even though it works fine in Skype setup and when I check it in “My computer”. So… Does any one out there have any ideas? Outside of a complete disc re-format and re-install, which I really don’t want to do just to get my camera to work in Skype, I’m out of ideas.

On Windows Vista 64 bit, I am not able to even sign in, as soon as Skype starts up, it is immediately errored. I am given a choice to either “close the program,” or “check online for a solution,” but clicking this does NOTHING. It just closes the program all together. I try to uninstall, restart the computer, resinstall, same thing. Uninstall, restart, install, restart, same thing. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I’ve tried to download a later version, and this does not help. To date, I’ve signed in twice total through Skype. HELP!!!!

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
Am new to this site, but is this the same problem I am having when I download Skype: Each time I try to download, I do not get an error message, but the download changes the Start bar and all my icons of my desktop. It becomes impossible to see the minimize, close out, and other icons. I used to be able to get it properly, however, it just changes one day.
HELP!!!
i have also an error 1603 with my skype latest version
