Carrying the torch – introducing Peter Parkes

Peter Parkes

Hello!

It seems like only yesterday that I was introducing myself to the readers of Skype’s UK blog — and today I’m stepping up to take on this one.

I see my role not as that of an author, or even necessarily an editor. Instead, I see myself more as a curator — so you’ll be hearing from plenty of other people here at Skype besides me. We’ve already featured Josh Silverman and Mike Bartlett among others, and that’s a trend I want to continue.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that I’ll be taking a back seat. My role is very much two way — both talking about what Skype’s up to, and, more importantly, listening to what you have to say.

I’m not going to claim that this blog isn’t about marketing, but those of you who’ve read the Cluetrain Manifesto (or any of the hundreds of books and blogs which discuss similar ideas) will be familiar with the idea of ‘marketing as a conversation’. That means talking and listening — and that’s what this blog is about.

You can find me on Skype as peterparkes — and don’t forget to grab the feed for this blog, or subscribe to email updates. That way you won’t miss a thing :)

    Hello,
I’m writing this to you hoping that you could forward it to someone to do something about this matter. We’ve been using Skype ever since it started. Skype is part of our daily life. I use it to communicate with my family abroad, see my loved ones on webcam, sending messages, sharing files, and having good times. I can’t describe to you how Skype brings people together, bring them closer, and bring joy to their lives.
No I dont pay to use your service. Probably Skype didn’t make from me more than 50 bucks in the whole many past years. But I hope that doesn’t mean we dont deserve your attention.

The new radical minister of communication here in Kuwait has requested to block skype. And now ISPs are blocking it. The reason is because Skype charges far less than what local phone companies charge for LOCAL PHONE CALLS!!

Now I dont want to go into details about their reasons but I beg you at Skype to communicate with the MOC officially and if not for lifting the block on Skype as a whole, at least for enabling PC to PC communications.

I wanted to send this as an email, but couldn’t find any email address. and the help page doesn’t work because of block filter. i’m using proxy at the moment and having trouble posting anything here

    Hi there
We have been with SKYPE for years and we LOVE it. We’ve moved a lot internationally and it keeps us in contact with our loved ones in Australia.. the other side of the world… but this is not what I’m here about.

Just wanted to wish you guys (and girls, whatever…) all of you a big fat HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY!!! and a huge THANKS.

The reason that I’m sending this through you peterparkes is because the powers that be at Skype are incredibly difficult to find! Suggestion – maybe you could have a ‘want-to-tell-us-something-good’ link? Perhaps you could pass on our best wishes and thanks to those who might listen.

The service just keeps getting better and better. We used to have problems intermittently with quality, and (very rarely) still do, but HEY, it’s the cheapest thing around, bright and bubbly, and a little Richard Branson-ish in the way-to-do business. We like this!

Keep up the good work, and keep it as cheap as possible!

    Kindest regards
    Angela & Family

Well, why not a post about the SkypeIn service for Canada? More explanation about the situation … you already lost so many customers! We only want the truth

    Hi Peter,

I hope you can help me. I have a Business in Germany and I’m trying hard to get Skype up and running. So far Skype for Business in Germany is a disaster. Since 6 months I’m ordering online numbers, I’m getting charged and get no online number. I’m reporting it to Skype support and all I get are canned replies. I was digging in the archives and it seems like other people have the same problem since 2008! To offer a service not being able to deliver is a shame, to charge and not to deliver for months is a crime. Hey, there is major problem here. Does anyone at Skype care? Can you help please?

    Thanks
    Thomas

    Hi Peter

I’ve been using Skype to Skype from South Africa to friends in the UK & USA for several years and most of the time have had good results. In July I needed to expand this to use Skype Out and initially had excellent calls. But for the last 6-8 weeks I have battled to get a successful connection on Skype Out. (Skype to Skype still usually works well).

Much as I would like to extend my subscription when it is exhausted, I do not feel I am getting enough value from Skype Out to do this. If you look at my account you will see the number of calls with little talk time and repeated connection tries. I can hear the other person every time but they mostly cannot hear me. I’ve been through all the help pages with no success after any changes made.

You have an innovative and potentially very useful service. When it works it gives great value. I shall be sorry to leave it.

    Dear Skype

My site USAFORHAITI.ORG has been receiving messages from earthquake survivors on the ground in Haiti, some of whom are using Skype.

I just received word that one of my contacts, Carel Pedre an earthquake survivor who been on skype getting messages to us from Port au Prince has run out of skype minutes. We are urgently trying to figure out how to help him replenish his account. Is there any way to pay for another persons skype or can the company do something?

I just received the following message via twitter from him:

carelpedre Again, I did not intend to ask. I need to add credits to my skype. Please donate on my paypal: pedrecarel@gmail.com

    Hi Peter,
I am using skype on pc and on a skype phone for a while in Spain. Recently I downloaded from http://www.skype.com/intl/es/download/skype/windowsmobile/ and installed Skype 3.0 on brand new HP IPAQ Data Messenger (with Windows Mobile 6.1), hoping to use skype with 3G/3,5G.
I manage to sign in, see all my contacts, call some of them, hear them on the other side of the line, but they cannot hear me. When I test the line with Echo, tells me to check the microphone and once I terminate the call, the phone freezes for few minutes and I need to restart it.
Can you give me advise on the matter.
    rgds
    George

However I cannot get it working.

PLEASE HELP! I cannot listen to my voice mail messages. My greeting works and Skype tells me that I have a voice mail, but when I click on the caller there is no longer an option to play back the voice mail message. This has been going on for a while now. I’m not sure why I’m paying for a service that does not work. Please help me fix this so I do not have to move to another online phone service. Thank you.

Hello! I try to call Korea from the USA on my Verizon Blackberry 8330 using Skype Mobile (Direct dialing pay as you go). In example, I tried dialing the following combinations in the Skype program; 011-42-2345xxxx, 11-42-2345xxxx, 42-2345xxxx, trying to call different Korean numbers and all I get is some type of recording in Korean (Not answering machines where I am calling), saying the call can’t be completed. I am billed a connection fee and a one minute call fee each time the recording is reached. What is the proper way to make an international call via the new Skype Mobile program? The calls I am trying to make can be made through my landline carrier and via my computer using the click on the map syatem. Thanks of any help.
