Display your phone number when calling from Skype

Something we always get asked by business users is “how can I display a phone number when making a call from Skype”. Calls that show up as ‘unknown’, or perhaps a non identifying combination of numbers such as ’0000123456′, are less likely to get answered. It also makes it impossible for the person to return the call if they can’t see the number it originated from.

The good news is we have a solution for you. It’s called ‘Caller identification (Caller ID)’.

Caller ID allows you to display your online number or your mobile number when calling phones from Skype.

You can use mobile numbers from any country, with the exception of Japan and Mexico.

You can use online numbers from Denmark, Estonia, Hong Kong, Japan, Poland, Sweden, United States and the UK. Hopefully we will be adding more countries to the list shortly.

How to set up caller identification:

Caller identification, as we call this feature, is easy to set up. Simply sign in to your account and follow the on-screen instructions.

Please note that if you have previously set up your mobile number to show when sending SMS messages you don’t need to verify the number again. Just choose to use the same number to show for SkypeOut calls.

You will see a screen similar to this:

SkypeCallerID.Selection.jpg

source: Skype Journal

In this case you can choose between using your online number or the mobile phone number associated with your Skype account.

If you have not previously associated a mobile number with your Skype account, you will need to verify the mobile number by following the instructions sent to you in an SMS.

Associating multiple numbers with your Skype account

It is possible to associate multiple online numbers with your Skype account. For instance you may have one number in New York and one in London. By associating both these numbers with your Skype account, caller ID will choose the one which is local to the person you are calling and display that number. If neither number is local to the caller, it will use your default number as the caller ID.

I followed the instructions, added our phone number we want displayed as caller id, and Skype sends an SMS message, which I don’t know what that is, with a code we need to enter. We use a handheld Philips VOIP phone, nothing showed up there, nor on the onscreen Skype window. Where are we supposed to receive this message? I looked up SMS on Skype, but there was no explanation what it is, only how to use it… We would very much like to use our phone number as caller id. Any help appreciated.

I’ve not been able to get this to work. Yet Skype is deducting for all the SMS attempts to send me the code. At one point, it was saying my mobile is already registered, but I did not get any interface like the one shown (“Display this number when I call phones”). Can’t seem to get a code from within Skype application either, just get a spinning wheel like it tries, and it deducts another fee for the SMS attempt. I have SMS on my phone and even had my provider/dealer confirm and send a test SMS to it.

I am thinking about switching my business phones from landlines to Skype for Business and using the PrettyMay product. Can I still keep my same phone numbers?

A staff of Tom company which is the partner of Skype in china said that skype does not support displaying number in china.

Is it true? what’s the reason?

I am a skype user in Hong Kong. I just buy a one month service from skype which the caller-identification is included. The caller-identification never work. I did double check the setting. And I also make a call to HGC(skype partners) to seek an answer. Please advise simply where it work in Hong Kong or not so that I need not to struggle for the settings. If not, please specified the time-frame to make it work. My phone number is something like +852 819x xxxx.

    Thanks very much.

It seems there is no way to activate your online number as caller identification as far as I can see. I use Skype version 3.8.0 in the Netherlands.

After reading Scotts comment I gather it doesn’t work in this country, yet.
It would save much trouble if that was clear from your choice under Account Settings / Caller Identification.

I tried to set up the displaying number. I got code from 887781 says “0B0j0_0?”.? is some alphabet.
However I cannot enter verification option box since it only accepts 6 digits.
Please advice me what is wrong with this issue.

So can someone explain this one to me, any skype user can have any phone number displayed when they use skype to make phone calls ? The reason I am asking is because it appears that there are people using skype to make crank phone calls and having someone elses phone number show up on the call receivers call identifier, can anyone determine where the actual phone call is originating ?

It is very frustrating. I thought I could display my business line on caller ID but no way to verify number if it is not a mobile number. I would like a refund or the satisfaction of complaining but there are no real people to talk to only these silly blogs.

Like some of the commentators before us, we have become very frustrated trying to figure out how to get our contacts to see our Skype ID name on their telephones when we call instead of 000-012-3456. We use Skype for business and would prefer to have our landline number displayed when we call. We would be happy to pay a fee for that. Because of the display of numbers they see when we call they have hung up or been annoyed when they answer because they thought it was an unsolicited call. PLEASE HELP US TO RESOLVE this issue. Thanks. Satellite.City.

I tried to setup my CallerID to display my GoogleVoice number, but I didn’t receive the SMS. Google’s help says Skype is at fault because they “treat SMS as if sending to an email” (whatever that means).

Please Skype: you are a *voice* telephony service – please allow the CallerID number to be verified by calling the number and having a computer *voice* synthesizer announce the code digits so that I can enter them, instead of sending SMS!

I keep being told to “Buy Skype Credit” even though I have a subscription.

I just bought a different italian phone number and I’d like to use it as a caller ID into my account. Unfortunately there is only my mobile number there, and it’s seem non way to use new phone.
I’m using standard account, but having setup a business account, I can add the ID to the group, but number belonging to peoples doesn’t became part of the business account (that sounds as a limit).

So how can I verify the new number bought?

Ditto to those following setting up caller ID to land/cell lines and not getting the confirmation code via SMS. No way to actually talk to support, which is ironic, considering Skype is a voice communications service.

SKYPE SMSs caller ID hijack to +85264504508

When I sent SMS from SKYPE to Japan +81 my caller Id is displayed as a +85264504508. During test to eliminate possibilities of infection on my Skype account as well as E-mail account I created new accounts.
To eliminate infection in my systems I sent SMS from Skype 4.1.0.179:
    - Skype on XP profession on IBM (GData security)
    - Skype XP on Viliv (One care security)
    - Skype 0.9.0..0 Beta Nokia
    - Skype on Apple Itouch
In all these test recipient got my id as a +85264504508. My number is +1623xxxx.
This problem exists only with SMSs sent to Japan thru SKYPE.
SMS sent directly from cell phone (T-Mobile) worked correctly.
    Anybody has solution?

  18. mike_klimek said 1221 days ago

+85264504508 is Hong Kong scam linked to Date.com and Match.com

  19. mike_klimek said 1221 days ago

Searching internet I found Chinese web with this info:
Linfei Lin msn account is lxl789@hotmail.com, Dating accounts are tai6669@italk.match.com, they are using SKYPE telephone, each call different. Or newsletter is +85264504508 0266414688 0277064035 0277064031 0277064588 0266414688 0266404588 0266414688

  20. mike_klimek said 1221 days ago

Additional information which indicate that the problem is with SKYPE:
To find out if my Skype and E-mail account is hijack and to eliminate possible infection in my devices I created the new:
    • E-mail account
    • SKYPE account.
From the new SKYPE account I sent SMSs from
    - Windows XP on IBM
    - Windows XP on Viliv
    - Apple I-touch skype.png
    - Nokia N81 (the newest Skype beta)
All of SMSs received by my friends in Japan show my (sender) number with fraudulent +85264504508.
Recipient is using Docomo. I did not test other Japanese cell phone service providers.
When I sent SMS directly (w/o Skype) from cell phones thru regular cellular net, my messages displayed my proper (sender) phone numbers.

So it is obvious that problem is related to SKYPE and Japan.
SMSs sent to other countries work correctly.

I too am experiencing problems with setting up caller identification. I just signed up to Skype today, and when I tried to set up caller ID, it said I just needed a little credit for 2 text messages for verification of the number. So I purchased a one month subscription. But every time I try to set up caller ID, it just continues to send me around and around in circles asking me to purchase more credit. Two hours of frustration so far. Not very user friendly for a first timer. Could anyone advise me how they have overcome this problem please?

  22. leslie.rathbone1 said 1144 days ago

I am also trying to receive my verification code. I keep getting charged for the SMS but I don’t actually receive the message. Has anyone gotten an answer for this problem??

  23. buddysmith215 said 264 days ago

Today, I found the answer many are seeking. From email recieved from Skype:
When you have a Skype Number, it is easy, and free, to set it as your Caller ID. Just follow these simple steps:

    Sign in to your account:
    https://secure.skype.com/account
In the Call Phones tab, click the Caller identification link, then click select a pre-saved number.
Select your Skype Number from the drop-down list and click Save. Your Skype Number is now set as your Caller ID.

You can assign your Skype Number as your Caller ID in the following countries:

    Chile (+56)
    Denmark (+45)
    Estonia (+372)
    *Japan (+81)
    Malta (+356)
    Poland (+48)
    Sweden (+46)
    South Africa (+27)
    United Kingdom (+44)
    United States (+1)

*Although a Skype Number can be set as a caller ID in Japan, it will not be displayed on any calls made to or from Japan. This is due to technical issues and we are working to resolve them as quickly as possible.

If you would like to deactivate your Caller ID, click Settings > Deactivate Caller ID.
