Sounds good: Skype 3.8 for Windows now in beta
Here is where people
One frequently finds,
Lower their voices
And raise their minds.
— Richard Armour on libraries
Libraries. Even if we don’t set foot in one, it’s comforting to know they’re there: massive silent repositories of thoughts, polemics and conversations that mankind has managed to produce in spite of its lower instincts. Some countries even celebrate the Library Workers’ Day on April 15, just a couple of weeks from now.
When it comes to libraries, Skype hasn’t sat idle either. That’s because today we’re announcing the beta version of Skype 3.8 for Windows, which contains an improved and optimized audio library. No need to lower your voice here. Let rip, for speaking your mind never sounded so good on Skype before.
]]>Here’s the main rub:
– Significantly reduced background noise
– Less delay
– Fewer call drops
– Fewer cut-outs
– Change your headset, headphones or microphone without having to fiddle with settings
In addition, we’ve hidden the avatar by default in incoming authorization requests. Some people have been using images that others don’t find all that pleasing, so this measure should help clean things up. The release includes a few other things — see the full change log on Skype’s Garage blog.
Now, if you’d like to give the new beta version a try, go ahead and download it.
Hiding the “avatar by default” in incoming authorisation requests isn’t a good idea IMHO. When i see an image that i don’t like, i know i have to be cautious or sometimes i even know i shouldn’t take the call or accept the new contact.
By hiding the avatar of the intruder, you disable a quite fast way to have a first impression. A pity!
I think better should be to have this “feature” as an “option”, not as a “by default”.
And by the way … the problem of the frozen image on my own image in the webcam is finally solved! Thanks.
Jean
I’m very happy to see the new beta version. There had been about two months no new version come. I’m glad you’ve improved the sound quality. (It was already very good, indeed.) Thank you for your providing so good software.

Jean you have still opportunity to see the image, you just need to make one mouse click for it.

I did not find about this new version on skype website. I tougth is was a joke or some kind of virus. I am reading others talking about it but I prefer wait until skype tell me about new version.
Fewer call drops!??? 3 skypeIn calls droped just this morning…
Hi. I like the new skype beta, sounds are more clear and I don’t have so much lag as in the previous version.
However I have found two slite bugs.
I use skype with pdt’s skype phone. Sometimes skype crashes and when I try to restart it, it just hangs. I don’t know the exact sercomstances under which this happens, but I have a 3 ghz processor and 1 gb of ram using windows xp, so it isn’t a lack of resources. Skype once crashed on startup and the other times when I wasn’t using it.
The other bug is that I heard echo from the other caller’s side when they are getting an incoming call while talking to me. This only happened once.
Thanks. I like this beta even more than the older skypes. It just seems more responsive!
Willem.

Hi. This bug of skype is really getting bad for me.
Almost every time I restart windows, skype crashes and I am unable to restart skype. Even if I end all the processes related to skype I know of, it still doesn’t want to run. I have about one in ten chance that skype would run.
I am using pdt’s usb phone, but I disabled the software to see if it helps. No luck. I am running an up to date windows xp sp2 with 1 gb ram and a 3.0 ghz processor.
I’m now going to reinstall skype beta. If this doesn’t work I’m going back to 3.5 until this gets fixed.
btw here is the error I get.
