Skype 2.0 for Linux – Seeing is believing

So here it is: video.

Today we’re proud to announce the general release of video calls in Skype 2.0 for Linux. As you may already know, the best things in life are often free and now you can make (and receive) free, great quality video calls on Linux.

I thought long and hard about what I could say about this release. But you know the adage, “Seeing Skype 2.0 for Linux is worth a thousand words.” So I’m keeping this short and to the point. Download it now to see (and hear) for yourself. Skype 2.0 for Linux builds upon the ground foundation of our previous release and adds the feature you’ve all been asking for – video.

We didn’t just stop there. We fixed hundreds of bugs, improved audio quality and made Skype that much easier to use. This version is now available in 20 languages (including English), so thanks to all our translators!

Maybe they are too busy getting bluez working with skype…
    Haaa, I’m dreaming out loud.
Anyways, I would also love to know what is going on…
Something must have happened, or at least decided within those 3 months !

  2. wonxly said 1837 days ago

I agree as well, would someone please let us know what is going on?

  3. xinoef said 1826 days ago

Well, since we got a tiny update skype-2.0.0.72 , I guess that is what they are doing… bug fixes… Still, would be nice to know what’s on the grill…

Are there any news about a next release?

before you work on 64-bit versions, lets see skypecasts available. that would be extreamly nice…i’m surprised you didn’t include this initially. before video… I mean video is nice too…it would also be really good if all version could have group video chats…I don’t know of any software that does this yet for free =D *wink wink*

I saw some people mention 64-bit isn’t worth it. Your absolutely wrong. 64-bit should be your next goal. my 32-bit and 64-bit libraries conflict and make my Ubuntu install quite un-stable. being able to use those 64-bit libraries is a must! Boss’s always go for the next best feature, but put it on hold for a bit!

I have 5 Skype machines here in my house and 3 Skype accounts (3 people). I have a NetGear Skype phone, a Windows laptop, 2 Ubuntu Desktops and a Ubuntu laptop. All of the PCs are 64-bit. Where does one even buy a 32-bit PC? Installation of the 32-bit app on a 64-bit Linux machine is *not* straight forward. And these days, installation of apps on Linux (at least Ubuntu) is generally *really* easy (my kids can do it).

We absolutely need a native 64-bit (AMD64) version of this application that supports video. I fail to understand why this is not a simple, inexpensive “feature” – just build on another machine and run regression.

Contrary to what everybody on this thread seems to believe, the 32-bit version of Skype is supported under 64-bit Ubuntu, without installing anything awkward or dangerous.

The ia32-libs package installs all necessary libraries to run the “Dynamic” Skype package.

Alternatively, the “Static” Skype package should also run without any dependencies.

However, it would be very nice if the 32-bit version of Skype was packaged as a 64-bit Ubuntu package, at least until there is a 64-bit version of Skype.

…and please let us know what you are working on right now.
I can not understand why nobody of you is able to write some words to us.

    We are waiting for news…

Hm, this was nice. For five minutes. Now we see Skype 4.0 beta for Windows…
You could use use GTK+, Cairo and Clutter (and maybe even GStreamer) to make something just as nice. But for god sake, add PulseAudio support (using GStreamer would do that for you!).

Also I suppose there is some QT4-based way of creating something as nice, but just do it, or do something as we’ve had nothing for well over a year yet the Windows users are getting nice GUI experimentations (yes I know about market share, but come on).

    Great Job!

But why dont u care about the jira entries?
By the way when you use ping-command with the Skype v2.0.72 over the time any other notification is blocked!

Please more support for linux and the api! We want to have the same nice features like the windows users!

    thx

Hey, I’m new with Linux and Skype. My question: By linux I cannot send SMS only call to other phones, that’s right?

  14. polrus said 1760 days ago

soon half a year will pass from the release and not even comments about what’s about to come apear…. I can’t understand why so profitable company cannot even afford good quality linux client. What we see now is avarage quality, outdated, outperformed by win version product

  15. afjop3456 said 1759 days ago

When is skype 3 expected to be availabe? Is it currently under development?

  16. xinoef said 1756 days ago

Nearly 7 months without saying anything…
But more importantly, video has been introduced with the 2.0 beta on November 7th last year… I remember that time, it was really great, really!
But I would like to point out that we are 2 months and 11 days away from video’s first anniversary.
Is the skype team really resting on its laurels for that long?

  17. halaszvari said 1750 days ago

Any news about a next release?

  18. telefonchris said 1747 days ago

Isn’t it funny to press the button “March 2008″ on this page to open the actual collection
of comments? Now is September. I think nobody from the Skype team is reading this comments.
I can write here whatever I want.

I give you one more chance. Please, please tell us what you are working on right now.
Give us some hints when we can expect the next release. Which features will it have?

Isn’t it nice to see people begging like a dog for some small information?

  19. smjwilson said 1599 days ago

OK, so you can’t be bothered to add an SMS facility to Skype for linux as it is in other versions but why on earth don’t you say so in the instructions to send SMS messages? I wasted a lot of time messing around thinking I haven’t installed the latest version until I found the right question to turn up this blog.

I receive video with yellow stripe down middle what is the problem only happens with some callers

  21. andredeyk said 1520 days ago

It seems Skype is a dying.
Skype for windows became completely bloated, while Linux still has 2.0 , but no PulseAudio support…
it becomes a less-universal, unlinke before.. dying

  22. jorijnbonaire said 1496 days ago

    @ lacostarun

    YELLOW STRIPE on incoming video

I have the same problem: with some friends I see a big yellow stripe vertically on the screen. the image i get of myself in the corner doesnt have this problem.
Did you get a solution yet? Can anybody else help me out?
