Skype 2.7 for Mac is here.

Update: We’ve just released a beta version of Skype 2.8 for Mac

Ok, I’ll admit – I really (h) this version. Today we released Skype 2.7 for Mac, and it has just the kind of features that us, Mac users, love. In our last version, we made Skype sound better, and in Skype 2.7 we’ve made it look better. We’ve enabled improved video quality on all the current Mac desktops or laptops. We’ve also introduced a feature you’ve all been asking for: contact grouping. With this version you will now be able to group your friends and family so you can keep an eye on those you care about.

Not only have we made it look good, but we’ve introduced my favourite feature of Skype for Mac after video: address book integration. This feature will save you loads of time — you can now see someone who is in your address book from within Skype’s contact list and be able to call them directly. And don’t worry, these numbers are not sent to anyone or stored on any Skype servers. We’re only displaying those that exist on your own computer.

We’ve made it better and easier to use. We’ve streamlined the way you send and receive files so they are all grouped within the new file transfer manager, we’ve introduced the ability to automatically redial busy numbers (so now you can get through to those pesky radio competition hotlines), and made it easier to change your volume and audio settings whilst you’re in a call.

We haven’t forgotten about the quality of Skype for Mac either — we’ve fixed a whole load of bugs, Skype for Mac is now available in русский язык (Russian), Čeština (Czech) or Norsk (Norwegian Bokmål) – thanks to Igor, Lukáš and Kenneth.

Best of all, Leopard users will purr since its ready for Mac OS 10.5 Leopard.

Download the new Skype for Mac and let us know what you think of it by commenting this post or forums.

At first I was really happy about the address book integration, but now it’s getting buggier and buggier. I entered new address book entries, and it used to be that I needed to make sure I hit the “edit” button again in Address book in order to see them pop up in Skype about 3 seconds later.

    Not anymore.

Now they frequently don’t pop up at all. Some contacts seem to “go through” just fine, but others never appear. Yet other show some entries but not others. No correlation, no rhyme or reason, just buggy as hell.

A HUGE pain, and another unreliable feature in Skype.

I still get duplicate voicemail entries (delete one and have the misfortune of clicking on the other and Skype is taking your computer DOWN my friends), and the random hangs when Skype gets unhappy.

Not my other apps, just Skype.

I’m getting rather tired of this. If you’re going to keep this proprietary, then at least get it RIGHT, people.

And these feature lags behind windoze isn’t winning you any friends, either.

I got an IM from linxpinx with a hint to disable the Mac’s Address Book integration feature in the preferences and indeed Skype now launches correctly. Hopefully the developers will fix the integration with Address Book in their next release. Thanks linxpinx! -Rei

You know, it’s kinda sad that there wasn’t more development (especially bug fixing and feature synch with the windows version) for Skype for Mac.. But I’m sure you people know what you’re doing. Until you make up your minds, I’m switching to Yahoo for Video, because it may be not the best tool either, but at least it’s STABLE. Bye bye.

regarding Skype freezing macs…I have Skype 2.7.0.257 on a MBP 2.33 Core2Duo with 2GB RAM and Leopard 10.5.2. I only have freeze issues when running video chat and moving the small video picture of myself around the window with the video of the other person. It has happened three times, always when moving my picture. It never happens at the beginning of a call–usually after 10 minutes or more. And it freezes my entire computer–no mouse, keyboard, nothing. Not even a spinning beach ball–the mouse arrow looks normal but is frozen. I have to hard-reboot to regain control. Of interest, upon a freeze, the Skype call audio will continue, but the audio progressively gets worse until it disconnects. Meanwhile, the fan in my computer starts accelerating, indicating that the CPU is doing a lot of work. I shut down each time after a minute or two (and before the CPU could overheat!). I think that this problem surfaced after I installed Office 2008. I don’t know if its related, but I had Word running each time there was a crash. Could be pure coincidence, but as crash-prone as Office is, there may be a connection. Sure hope Skype can fix this, as it’s annoying to have a complete hard freeze on the computer.

I love my mac but to get it to work with Skype? -ugghhhh!

First I just end up in a loop, I sign in and all I get is advertisements inviting me to Download now! buy credit! buy a Skype phone do this do that, use Skype NOW!

But impossible to get to the page where you CAN use Skype – not possible to get to the contacts list etc. So I see this post and download version 2.7, no the ONLY think I see is my contacts list, no other features visible, I cannot buy Skype out credit or anything so from one extreme to the other – in a word USELESS!

I don’t know what to say but 2.7 crushes every time I try to make a call.

    Any Suggestion

  12. bryanbarca said 1817 days ago

The integration of the Mac Address Book into the Skype Contact List is a wonderful feature … except I would like to see an option added to flag contacts you want to have kept on the Skype server (at least Name and Phone Number). I use Skype from both my Mac and my PC which means that I have to duplicate the Skype contacts I want to see on my PC and on any other computer. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize the Contacts added from my Address Book would be local to my MacBook so I deleted all of my previous Skype entries, which now means I have to enter about 60 Contacts again, and they now appear twice in my Skype Contacts List. If I could identify which contacts in my Address Book I wanted to be uploaded to the Skype servers, and if they were updated when they were changed, that would be a useful step towards a more complete integration. This is certainly not a complaint, just a suggestion from a very satisfied Skypephile.

Might I suggest you list the postings in reverse chronological order so the most recent, and probably most relevant, comments appear at the top of the list.

^^^ I’m having the same problem. I just DLd it and cannot get it to work at all. This is my first time attempting to use Skype. How unfortunate that this seems to be a non-isolated event.

I just upgraded to Skype version 2.7 (Macbook Pro 2.16GHz Mac OS 10.5.4), as I saw there was a new version and 2.6 unexpectedly quit now and then, but otherwise worked fine. Now when I run 2.7 my fan runs full blast!!!! It’s very loud and annoying, so much I don’t want to Skype anymore. Another thing is Skype doesn’t recognize the microphone of an external firewire video camera. iChat does recognize it, so we have it connected correctly. Please help. I can’t find version 2.6 of Skype anywhere, can someone post a link to where I can download it?
    Thank you!!!

  17. bongolanm said 1797 days ago

I have downloaded the Skype 2.7 as the ad.prompted me to try the “new version”. I got myself in big trouble: I am unable to launch Skype now; it keeps bouncing back to the Application storage (the older version worked beautifully, which, unfortunately, I deleted).
I also have a running account and have been using Skype for years.
I have an iBook Mac OS 10.4.11 and 800 MHZ G3 with 640 MHZ SDRAM.

How can I fix this problem? Where can I find the older version compatible with this system? Do I have to do everything from scratch or the old/new version will retrieve my password, account, contacts, etc?

  18. lissa_az said 1777 days ago

@bongolanm: If I had this problem, I would uninstall Skype and try again. GL!

Is there a link to 2.6 so that I can downgrade from 2.7 ? I stupidly upgraded to 2.7 on my 800 MHz G4 iBook and it crashes on launch (wrong CPU subtype ???). I wish I’d kept the old .dmg for 2.6…

To cdnjon in particular or anybody in general – Hi can you pleaseplease let me know what the other 8 possible solutions were for Mac “Unable to connect to Skype P2P network”. Upgrades seem to have lead to this and now cannot connect no matter what – have tried the have tried uninstalling and then installing older versions of Skype blah blah but to no avail.
    Also tried:
    1. Quit Skype
    2. Go to the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/
    3. Delete the file “shared.xml”
    4. Start Skype….
    5. Unable to connect to Skype P2P network as usual…

Skype, please offer more FAQ support to mac users – We love Skype but are becoming disillusioned……. h e l p ! !

I’m on an iMac, OS 10.5.5, and recently d/led Skype 2.7.0.330.

So far, I only have two Skype contacts with whom I have been able to talk to. But on both I have the same connection problem. Either calling or answering, my window only shows my video and the other person as an icon. It takes several recalls (incoming or outgoing) to get the initial black window with me in the small lower left insert. Then the black is replaced by the other person.

    Am I doing something wrong?

  30. pinkartdog said 1625 days ago

Hi, I have the same problem as ridongculous (posted on 22 feb 2008) and I can’t find a response to the question.

I have a built in isight camera on my new(ish) iMac (I got it in the summer) but Skype won’t recognise it. When I go to preferences and choose video it says ‘no camera connected’. I’ve ticked ‘enable skype video’ but nothing happens.

I’ve tested the camera in other applications and it works fine in iMovie and Photobooth.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can connect it?

    Thanks!

    as custom phone?

IS there afield I can turn on (can’t find it)

  33. damiankristof said 1622 days ago

Whenever i use Skype it crashes. it only happens on Mac… never when i use PC. what the heck is going on… i didn’t think that it was my Mac until i used my PC again… surely since MAY of last year there would be a more stable update/patch to sort out the crashes that we are all experiencing.

is there something that can be done?

    thanks SKype team

I am in Tianjin, China. My Skype is unable to login and keeps giving me the error: “Failed to sign in: unable to connect server”. I am a computer retard and just switched over from a PC, so totally not use to all of the mac stuff. If anyone has any suggestions of how to fix this, I would be very grateful. I know that there is another post similar to this on Mar9, but I didn’t understand the fix.

    Thank you

I just started having this problem… Whenever I get an incoming call the “reject or accept” box does not appear. So now I have no way of answering the call. I always have to call them. How can i fix this? Is there some kind of setting that I need to make sure I have checked. I am on a Mac Book Pro. When I first downloaded skype back in May of 2008, it worked fine and the “accept/reject call” box would appear. Now it doesn’t. I am running the latest version of Skype.

    Thanks

  37. peterparkes said 1598 days ago

@jen_mank did you get the problem after downloading Skype 2.8 Beta? If so, I recommend that you switch back to 2.7.

  38. craigbob99 said 1597 days ago

    I’m on new MacBook (aluminum) OS X 10.5.5. I just installed 2.7.0.330.

I get the same message as others do: Failed to sign in: unable to connect to Skype P2P network.

So. first I tested my account on my windows box. That works, so I know it’s not my firewall or my account.

Then I uninstalled it, and deleted all the stuff I could find under Library for skype, and reinstalled it. same behavior.

I have no issues with aMSN (with Video) or iChat on my Mac.

My account is an admin account, and I’ve had no permissions issues with any of the other programs I’ve installed.

Please research this issue. I’d love to use skype, but only on my Mac.

  39. craigbob99 said 1597 days ago

    correction OSX 10.5.6

  40. craigbob99 said 1597 days ago

    Additional information.

I fired up little snitch and launched skype and tried to log in. there is no network activity at all.

When I launch aMSN, iChat, etc I see traffic for those applications.

There is nothing for Skype at all.

My conclusion is that it is definitely not a network issue – it is a Skype program issue – it’s not even making it to the network stack on my Mac.

  41. nathan_kukathas said 1582 days ago

SORRY THIS IS SO LONG, PLEASE HELP!…..
The short summary is I get this message: “Failed to sign in: unable to connect server”

I tried everything ppl suggest above. I still have no luck. For more details see below:

    My Story:
I am currently visiting Tianjin , China. I have a MBP and have been using skype for 2 years, with out any problems.

The first day I was in Tianjin my Skype worked fine.
The second day, it worked for 1/2 the day. In the afternoon it automatically logged me out of skype and when I tried to start Skype up again it failed upon log-in.

    Skype message read:
“Failed to sign in: unable to connect server”

I thought, maybe I need to download the latest version of Skype, I was running 2.6.?
So I downloaded 2.7… (the latest) ; I put the old one in the Trash and tried to launch the new version of Skype. Upon login, I experienced the same problem: “Failed to sign in: unable to connect server”
That lead me to this forum in hope of an answer. So far the above solutions have NOT worked for me.

    I have tried:
    1) open skype preferences: disabled “Show Address Book Contacts” – This did not work
    2) Quite Skype: Go to the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/ : I deleted the file “shared.xml” – This did not work
    3) I then noticed that when I went back to ‘ the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/’ , the file “shared.xml” had re-appeared. I removed it and double checked it was in the Trash this time. That is when I discovered the one I originally deleted was also in the Trash. Thus proving (in my case) upon opening Skype app. the “shared.xml” file is created and placed in the ‘~/Library/Application Support/Skype/’ folder. I triple checked that I was really deleting the “shared.xml” file and repeated above processes. Still failed.
    4) I removed the “shared.lck” file that was also in the ‘ ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/’ folder. I tried to open Skype and again the “shared.lck” file re-appears (like the “shared.xml” did) and I still get the message saying: “Failed to sign in: unable to connect server”

I was successfully using Skype on two different networks here in Tianjin (office and hotel) until the problem started 2 days ago. Since the problem has started I have not been able to log in on either of these networks.

I have asked others in the office if they can log into Skype. They were successful. Note: they were using Windows version.

Note: I have not checked if I can log in to my account on their machines, however from reading the forum notes above, it sounds like in other user’s case (whom experienced my problem), they were able to log in on another machine, thus so far I assume this would be the case for me too.

Someone please help me ASAP. I use Skype (Pro) and make Skype to Skype and Skype out calls approx. 15mins. / hr for 15hrs each day. Right now I am pulling hair trying to figure out how I can get connected to my customers again. I also have call FWD through my Skype Pro account and it appears people can not call me via this right now either. That said I am unsure if it is related, as I have had some problems receiving txt message to my iPhone the past 24 hrs (started 12 hrs after the Skype issues). I am getting txt msg 5 hrs delayed… not a huge thing. In addition I am experiencing terrible battery life with my iPhone, this started at the same time as the txt msg problem and I can not fix the issue no matter how long I charge for, the battery lasts only 3-4 hrs, in stand-by mode. Until now my iPhone has worked fine.

My communication world is falling apart. No-one can call me, and I can’t call them…. HELP !

  42. djsimonds said 1582 days ago

I have Skype 2.7 installed without problems on my MacBook. I have a bluetooth headset synched properly. When using Skype Out I hear the other party clearly and without distortion. But the other party either a) experiences very poor reception or b) hears only static. Can you suggest a remedy?

  43. peterparkes said 1581 days ago

@nathan_kukathas sorry to hear you’ve had problems signing in to Skype – it sounds like a firewall-related problem, but if others can connect on the same network then that may not be the case.

Make sure you’re quitting Skype by choosing Skype > Quit from the menu bar – closing the contact list window doesn’t actually quit the app.

@djsimonds I suggest that you point them in the direction of our call quality guide – and if that doesn’t do the trick, give me a shout

  44. treetwig said 1571 days ago

Wow, reading these comments I feel less alone. I lost my old version of Skype in a system re-install, and now cannot load the new version on either my OS 10.3.9 or 10.4.11.

My sister wants to talk to me! Have a heart and make the old, WORKING version of (Mac) Skype available to all of us again.

  45. thomas_de_pomas said 1570 days ago

Hey guys, sorry to chime in with a problem without directly contributing to a solution, but I have the same problem as manie_grove, wenshuizaixin and ghunter1310: After updating to Skype 2.7 for Mac, I can’t connect anymore, getting only the “Unable to mount database” message. What’s causing this? Has anyone experienced the same thing and solved the problem?

  46. thomas_de_pomas said 1570 days ago

Er, dang – I feel like a fool; after the so-manieth attempt at restarting and re-logging in, I’m actually online now. Don’t know what changed, but it works. Try restarting the program a couple of minutes after you’ve shut it down – that seems to be approximately what has worked for me.

  47. fentonheirtzler said 1540 days ago

ISSUE #1: The major hurdle in using Skype to replace a land line telephone is running your Mac on full, even when you are not otherwise using it.

ISSUE #2: I also have a Skype Phone (Fr-33.2 from IPEVO). Either the Fr-33.2 software must restarted, or the USB connection physically re-set ever time the Mac wakes up.

Some action on ISSUE #1 is definitely due. If the Skype programers can also lay the groundwork for 3rd parties to deal with ISSUE #2, that would be nice as well.
