US and European PSP Slim & Lite owners, rejoice

psp2.jpg

Earlier this month, we said it’d be available later this month.

If you’ve got a Sony PSP Slim & Lite and have been waiting since CES for a system software update so you could make Skype calls, now is the time to act. All you need to do is to upgrade your handheld’s system software to version 3.90.

With the update, foreshadowed in Sony’s PlayStation blog and now also announced by the Sony folks in Europe, PSP Slim & Lite users can make free voice calls to 276m other registered Skype users, see which friends are online and available to talk.

Also, if you have a bit of Skype credit lying around, you can use your PSP to make cheap SkypeOut calls to landlines and mobiles anywhere on the home planet.

To get started with Skype on PSP, it might be worth checking out this video by John Koller, senior marketing manager for PSP at Sony:

    HI I’m a user of PSP-1000
And i was wandering if skype will be available for my psp in a future

    PSP-1000 = FAT

  2. ashmeetj said 1933 days ago

It could… but Sony wouldnt be doing it anytime soon, the psp slim has twice as much memory on the RAM than the psp fat. The psp fat jus doesnt have enough RAM.

    (i already have the download)

  6. sorasonofpan said 1928 days ago

I am really irked about the upgrade because I can’t use it on the original PSP line. I urge you, I implore you to make one available to the rest of the PSP users out there.

would the GO CAM work since that it has a built-in mic already or do we have to get another type of cam and microphone?

hi, i have downloaded the 3.90 firmware and i am really excited to have skype at my psp. i went straightaway and bought the go cam, and i am really DISAPOINTED for not being able to make a video call. will this feature be included in the near future??????

Man this sucks.I have Skype on my PSP so i go out and buy the new PSP Slim remote and the regular PSP headset that they show in the video and it doesnt work. Why release something when the headset isnt even available. If you go online everyone says the regular headset will work, you just need the new Slim remote.Thats not true.I have new remote and it does not work.I dont even understand why the slim would even need a new headset when the old one fits right into the new remote.Sony just trying to milk us for as much as they can get.

Hi, It´s great to connect skype on my PSP, but my question is ¿Shall I make a skype´s video-call on my PSP, adding a webcam from the PSP´s USB?

    Thanks.

    Warning to all:
There are a lot of FAKE PSP 2000 remote controls that actually work fine with headphones but DO NOT HAVE the connector for the microphone! This is confirmed by many others and me by taking apart one of these devices, they only have a 3 connector jack (TRS), not the needed 4 connector jack (TRRS: Tip-ring-ring-sleeve). So we need the official PSP remote from Sony (or at least a decent copy with all the functions).
Mungrin: maybe you have that problem?

I had the PSP 1000 and went to get the PSP 2000. It is worth the expense… Despite that I had to buy all a new set of accessories I primary use my PSP as a multimedia player to get my media from my home media server… and with this feature, Sony really start to overrun the competition. But to really use Skype as a phone, it should still have the following enhancement in the future
. Cannot use the remote control to answer/make calls.
. Skype should run in background when using other PSP’s feature and be activated when call’s
. The list of contact could be organized by name and each name could have multiple access like its skype name/house number/cell/work etc.
. Would be great to have a bluetooth headset )

With wireless access point being more and more available, the union PSP/Skype definitively open a new era to the telephony ‘on the go’. And as we say… “Congratulation and hope they live happylly ever after”

Guys, Sony launched some crap software with BT for video and voice. I love the new skype app on the v3.90 But it only supports voice…. Will you release a version that will support video on the psp. This will be great if you can do this!!!!

    Two Points:

If you add SkypeOut contacts to Skype after you downloaded Skype to the PSP, those new contacts do NOT appear on your PSP!

    Am Imissing something?

Finally, no issue with std remote and headset.
