Skype for Mac on Leopard
Like a lot of people in the Mac community, we’re excited that Mac OS X Leopard is now out in the wild. As you may have read, Skype runs into trouble when Leopard’s firewall is activated. At the moment, this affects a minority of Skype users.
However, we wanted to let you know that we’re embracing Apple’s new security efforts. By doing so, we’re continuing to ensure that Skype for Mac is the most secure internet-calling platform a Mac user can get. Our engineers are tweaking Skype for Mac and as soon as safely possible, the issue will be resolved.
In a few weeks, the fix will be included in an updated version of Skype that has a loving relationship with the Leopard firewall.
A few Weeks? oh maaaaaan…….Leopard has been out for a few days but the developer releases have been out for MONTHS! Are you kidding me???? COmeOn skype, pick it up!
How can it only affect “a minority of Skype users”? From what I can see Skype breaks on *any* Leopard install that has the firewall enabled! So any Skype user who knows enough to switch on their firewall can’t use Skype. Switching the firewall off is not a serious option and having to wait *weeks* before being able to use Skype again is unforgivable.
Is there some way to get the current version of Skype working under Leopard *with* it’s firewall enabled? If there is tell your users!
David, I’m guessing it affects only a minority of Skype users because most Skype users are using something other than OS X 10.5.
I too am a little surprised (and chagrined) that Skype’s developers didn’t find this in the preview releases of Leopard, but I’m also sympathetic; it’s tough trying to hit a moving target.
But it’s stationary now. Here’s hoping it takes less than “weeks” to fix.
Is there anything that can be done as a stopgap, even through the command line? I don’t relish having to keep my firewall off when using Skype (especially since I use it a lot on public/hotel WiFi nets)
davidshanahan:
Apparently, Skype does NOT break on ALL Leopard installs. I’m running Mac OS X 10.5 (Build 9A581), have the firewall enabled with “Block all incoming connections”, and can make outgoing calls with no problem using Skype 2.7.0.49 beta. Incoming calls also work, however, they seem less reliable and are sometimes dropped.
I’ve been using Skype pretty much trouble-free since I installed Leopard the day it was released. So I’m not sure what the problem is with some users’ systems.
There is a way around this that i found until the next release of Skype.
the issue is is because of a firewall issue and skype’s way of renewing it’s “tag” that the macOS assigns it every time it is launched. Hence, macOS will not let it run.
Many have found workarounds until the next version of skype comes out:
but i believe my workaround is more safe, but maybe the least practical.
i say the most safe because from what i’ve seen the only work around people have come up with is to turn off the firewall, and YOU NEED your firewall for various reasons i will not get into here.
therefore, try what i’m doing (keep in mind this is temporary untill the next Skype comes out):
download skype, (if you have skype already installed make sure you completely erase skype form your HD before this)
Next open the .dmg file you’ve downloaded and run skype form the disk image. DO NOT DRAG TO YOUR APPS FOLDER!
just run it form there, it might get annoying to keep the disk image there on your desktop every time you run it and to also rep”open” and “always Allow” to the MacOS’s warnings displayed every time it is run, but at least you got skype running.
PS: don’t get rid of the .dmg file! once you turn off your computer and turn it back on you’ll need to open the file to mount the disk image to run skype!
I found the solution that will make everybody happy: You can have the firewall on and even go to stealth mode and Skype will work perfectly.
Do the following: Go to firewall – Choose “set access for specific services and applications” – Highlight “Skype” and you will have the choice of allowing or blocking incoming connections (arrow up/down) – Choose Allow – Click on the Advanced tab and check “Enable Firewall Logging” and “Enable Stealth Mode”. You’ll see it works – Leopard is GREAT!
tusaisqui: Um, no.
Easy…
Just use the “Skype 2.6.0.151.dmg” and open the skype app in the image without moving it into the Applications folder.
Works for me every time…
as i wrote above “startsurfer000″ just open the disk image. don’t install it.
looooooooooooool
Skybe is in the top ..

I just upgraded my iMAC (new iMAC I bought this nov 07) from Tiger to Leopard. I had Skype running on Tiger set up with a nice female voice announcing when I log into Skype, when new people log in… etc…
I updated to Leopard and now it is the new male voice from Leopard that took over. I changed the Apple voice in Leopard from the male voice to Vicki the female voice but Skype still uses the male voice even after un-installing Skype and installing the latest Skype version for OSX and restarting my iMAC.
Any body else is having this problem and may know how to fix it??? Thanks

I recently download Skype 2.7 Beta which says Leopard compatible, but by connections are only successful outgoing. They see me I don’t see them. Anyone else have this issue?
A number of times, I have called my friends and on their answer I get a blank green screen with my picture. To correct the problem I ask them to call me back and video is resumed. I am operating leopard with imac Intel core 2 Duo 10.5.1 Any comments please
I replaced Skype 2.7 Beta with 2.6 I had nothing but problems with Beta.
@mikeanav, an Imac, bought on Nov 07 can’t be new, because the intel Macs are out now since 2005…
My problem is that I can’t even download skype with my new MacBook. I have os x and Leopard. The download starts and then stops and 15MB and will go no farther. Whose fault is this? When will it be corrected?
Just installed Skype on my Macbook after years of using it on XP and Vista. I’m really disappointed. The install is very bad, as others noted it put an icon on my desktop that I can’t seem to move to the applications folder. Also, sound quality is not as good as a much less powerful XP machine.
Come on guys, how hard can it be to let us install it into the right spot?
@ innes_jon there isn’t an installer for Skype for Mac, so I’m a little confused about what’s going on.
Once your download of Skype for Mac is complete, drag the Skype icon to the Applications folder icon. That’s all you need to do You can put it somewhere else (like your desktop) if you prefer.
