Mexico and Ireland get SkypeIn

Make cheap calls to Ireland

It was about ten weeks ago when we last talked about new SkypeIn countries on this blog. Back then, we hit the sweet eighteen. SkypeIn countries, that is.

Now, we’ve added two more. So you can make cheap calls to Mexico and Ireland. The country that gave us Pancho Villa has a population of over 108 million. When the 6 million Irish are added, we have a crowd that packs a punch. And deserves SkypeIn numbers.

Which is exactly what they’ve got now. Enjoy!

For those who think SkypeIn is just an orthographically challenged way of saying things like “Gone Skypin’”, I have this little explainer: When you have a SkypeIn number, your friends who don’t have Skype can call a regular phone number. And you will receive the call on your computer or any other piece of gear that runs Skype.

As Borat would say, “Is nice!”

Yay, nice one, Irish numbers at last, thank you!

I appreciate the news of SkypeIn expansion services based on country populations. I believe that the last census showed Canada had a population of 35,000,000 people. Is there any available news on when Canada may receive SkypeIn service numbers?

    Thank you,

Great Irish number !!!! Thanks a million!

It would be really really helpful if Skype users could sign up to be notified automatically when Skype-in numbers in a particular country become available. Yes, I’d check the Netherlands box in a minute. Already have a US number, but a Dutch number would be great.

That’s great to hear that Mexico has SKYPE-IN but is it all over Mexico? I signed up (new to SKYPE) for Skype-pro because it allowed calls to any land lines in Mexico only to make a call and get charged.
Later I realized that it applies only to Monterrey and Mexcio city locations. Is this the case perhaps with Skype-in?

Re Canada: this SkypeIn breaker issue is a CRTC regluation regarding 911 services. Until CRTC recognizes that “Skype is not a replacement phone service, etc.” we have a problem. Call your local MP and complain.

    Help

I’m mexican and was getting exited about the news until I discovered that SkypeIn as well as SkypePro and the Global € 0.017 Rate are ONLY FOR THREE CITIES! (Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara) What happens with us all in the remaining dozens of cities!! And I’m desperatly waiting for toll-free numbers in Mexico too!! Why is this so slow? Is it because of the local telephone companies that won’t get the deal at a fair price?

Come on Guys… Vonage has had numbers for Canada for ages… you can’t tell me vonage is a better voip service than skype. If they can find a way into Canada… so can you guys. For all those plagued by not being apeased by skype for skypein numbers in your area I found http://www.didww.com/ to be really helpful. You’ll be able to direct a number from your area to a skype phone and there rates are really reasonable. In fact in Cases it’s cheaper than SkypeIn… So you may want to switch over anyway.

Thanks, sonburn, that service looks great. $5 per month for a local Canadian number from a long list of cities. Nice!

http://www.didww.com/ works very well but the Skype Voicemail does not work wiht didww.com numbers.

Evening, I’m a newbie to what telephony is available to the Canadian public, Presently, I am looking at what systems are available and how they fill my particular needs.
Regarding Skype, the main problem, as I see it, is that SkypeIn is not available. There also appears to be problems with support, whether or not these problems actually exist or are a problem with the subscriber not understanding how a particular feature works I do not know because I have not subscribed to Skype yet, and therefore have not personally used support.
There does appear to be a way around the lack of SkypeIn in Canada with didww.co, but I read here that there are problems with Skype Voice mail using it.
So, what is a newbie to do? Has anyone used other non-conventional telephony providers_what were their experiences with them, etc?

IsraelNumber.com can provide a forwarding of numbers from Canda/Italy/Spain and many other locations to your Skype user. The cost is about 15$ setup, 15$/month for most locations. unlimited incoming call, fix cost, no long-term commitment, multiple numbers. At sign up, request to forward your calls to your Skype user.

why skype mexico is only for Mexico city, Monterrey and Guadalajara? I want to pay for the unlimited mexico plan, but is pointless if i am not calling to any of those cities in mexico
why unlimited US does not have those restrictions and Mexico does?

  19. joshb79 said 1591 days ago

I’ve always considered the CRTC’s insistence on e911 services for SkypeIn to be dubious at best. SkypeIn is solely an incoming enhanced telephony service. The value of registering a phone number for emergency services is relevant only to identifying the source of an outbound call to an 911 call center.

I suppose the problem is that the CRTC sees Skype as a provider of outbound service as well as inbound service. I found that the easiest solution is to buy a virtual phone number from a 3rd party company that can forward calls to Skype, such as virtufon.com or didww.com.

    HELP!!
I want to switch my account from Unlimited US and Canade to Unlimited Mexico. When I hit switch on the subscription page, Mexico is not an option. What’s up with that? How do I switch to Unlimited Mexico?

  22. jctcom said 1145 days ago

This 911 requirement is BS as joshb97 mentioned above the 911 requirement affects outgoing calls not incoming. We already have skypout so what’s the deal. I have sent a complaint to CRTC via their complaint form on their website and received the following reply I would encourage everyone to post a complaint on CRTC’s website once a week from now until this issue is resolved!

    Dear Mr. Taylor:

Thank you for taking the time to contact the CRTC.

The CRTC is not directly involved in regulating the services provided by internet based services. Wireless, long distance and internet services are competitive services and are subject to very limited CRTC regulation. The Commission does not regulate their rates, quality or provision of service, or their business practices.

In order for international companies such as Skype to provide Canadian numbers, they would have to become a Canadian reseller. To do that, they would have to enter into a business relationship with a Canadian carrier. They would then obtain the Canadian numbers from that carrier as well as other services required by Skype to provide a PSTN-interconnected service. This applies to all foreign companies wanting to provide Canadian numbers.

To the extent that Skype interconnects with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in Canada – that is to say, it connects with other telephone numbers whose users have not downloaded the Skype software – Skype has certain obligations. Skype would be required to register with the CRTC; enter into a business relationship with a Canadian carrier to obtain interconnection to the PSTN; and, as a matter of pubic safety, Skype would need to ensure that calls made to 911 are completed through 911 call centres, also known as the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). As in the case of numerous other competitive service providers in Canada, it is a business decision of Skype, if it chooses to meet these obligations and offer such a service in Canada.

For more information about the services offered by Skype, or its availability with your service provider, you should contact Skype and your service provider. If you make Skype aware of your desire for its services it may keep this in mind when it is assessing its business decisions as to the types of services it will make available in Canada.

    Regards,

This was my reply to CRTC:

Why do we have these ridiculous requirements in Canada where as in the rest of the countries (Including the US) Skype is able to make the disclaimer that it is not for emergency calls and does not replace a regular phone system. We as Canadians are not interested in these restrictions imposed by CRTC (For the sole purpose of making it harder for interested competitive systems to be allowed into Canada) and want them lifted so that we can enjoy this service!

Until such time as this is resolved I will be directing / Encouraging other people to also post this complaint with you (Unless you can direct me to whomever is directly responsible for these regulations that other countries do not seem to have problems with).

    Carl
