Skype Web Toolbars causes crashes in Internet Explorer and Firefox: Apology and solution.

Have you ever seen the phone-numbers in your web-browser being displayed with small flags and a Skype icon next to it?
Something like this? 1800Flowers
If so, then you have experienced the benefit of the Skype Web Toolbars.

Since you have reached this page you have most likely also experienced a crash caused by this feature. I deeply apologize for the trouble caused.and assure you we are doing all we can to resolve this!

In fact, most likely we already have a fixed version for you to start using now!

You can download the latest version here.

If you would rather simply get rid of the add-on (and loose the highlighting of phone-numbers) you can do that from the Tools menu in your browser where you will find an entry about managing add-ons or extensions. In the most recent versions you can also go to the Windows Control Panel and uninstall the item called Skype Web features ! or Skype Toolbars!

You can also view some demonstrations about Skype Toolbars

Yes, I could solve my same problem by disabling “Skype add-on (mastermind)” through “Manage Adds-on” of Tools.

Many Thanks to your idea, comments, doctorrog (Nov.11), ssivulka (Nov.22) and jiherren (Mar 15).

Prayer to all cyclon victims in Burma and earthquake victims in China.

A friend and I are having problems with Skype, just like everyone else. Except, my friend’s laptop hard drive is currently broken. Her computer kept freezing up during video calls, and soon after crashed. It is impossible for her to reboot her computer using her hard drive. Is there another way to reboot and install either windows vista or xp; and/or continue using Skype? If anyone can help. please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Dan

So I just found out about this issue. IE has crashed, but the problem is I cannot
close IE with task manager. I have closed my laptop twice and the page doesnt disappear. I have uninstalled skype the lastest version 3.8. No change has occurred.
I dont know how to get rid of the page. What should I do to make it disappear.
I tried to open a new IE page to enable/disable the add on skype thing in the tool bar, but nothing has happened.

I hope someone call help me.

    For english version… call me

sorry for my english..but i hope everybody understand.I have xpsp3,IE 7 and the latest skype version 3.8.0.115,skypeieplugin.dll version 2.2.0.176.My problem is not an ie crash, but when i page to finance.yahoo.com and real quotes option is turned on the page can load but after a while the “famous”message(whith sound):impossible to open the page etc..appears.Turning off real quotes option works fine of course.I think the problem occurs when the streamerapi.finance.yahoo.com/streamer tries to load. Now i have 2 skype addons in IE and disabling only one (manifest)works out,i can get real quotes no problem.ciao

    Peter,

I just purchased a new dell notebook yesterday and it started crashing constantly. So I googled crashes and it led me to this forum. That is complete joke. How can you expect us to pay for your services when you crash our computer. I find this completely unacceptable to not have integrated the skype program with Microsoft. Not like you didn’t know as Microsoft controls what 98% of the market..great it works with Apple the 2 customers that use it in Bhutan will be estatic. (Not that there is anything wrong with Bhutan seems like a cool country).

Remove the Ad-on. It’s not worth the trouble. I’m constantly disabling it since I’m a programmer and need to create/delete new users on a daily basis. I love Skype but this really is a headache.

Is this problem fix now? I have no problem with it in firefox, and I would like it in both browsers.

Most annoying to find the skype add-on cannot be moved on the IE7 toolbar. Users must uninstall the add-on so their preferred (handier) Home icon is where we want it. To design that add-on so it cdoesn’t work with the toolbar customization options (even if thereafter locking the toolbar), only to find it can’t be moved from the first slot, seems both lazy, but likely just a means of monopolizing the user’s toolbar. As for sneakily forcing auto payments assure subscriptions are forceably re-subscribed, too is at the very least insulting and at most, illegal.

I had ms diagnose my problem and wow, a solution exists.
I need to update the skype plugin for IE. Problem is I never use IE!
    When I use Internet i use Firefox…

So what’s this solution to the problem?

    Not what MS thinks anyway…

  21. catherine.moynihan said 1314 days ago

Do you need to uninstall the version of Skype already on your machine before installing the new one. Is it a full version or just an update. This would be very helpful to know

  22. sonofthesands said 1306 days ago

I am using the latest version of Skype (4.1.0.141) but still get the IE crash. IE works fine 100% of the time if I start Skype before IE. If I start Skype when IE is open it will ALWAYS cause IE to shutdown about 5 seconds after signing in. Sometimes it gives me the old unexpected error routine, but most times it just disappears without so much as a by your leave. So the happy apology and fix suggestion at the top of this page ain’t worth a hill of beans I’m afraid Mr Skype.

I am using Skype 4.1.0.179 and IE 8.0.6001.18702 both of which I think are the latest. IE Add on Manager shows Skype add-on is enabled when I display All Add-Ons but it does not display in Currently Loaded Add-Ons. How do I get it to load so I can use the integration? My target app is salesforce.com so this is quite a pain not having it working. any help appreciated

I have lot to learn about Skype; thanks for the technology that identifies and addresses my lack of information / knowledge.

Skype add-on still crashing intermittently when I shut down IE. Please fix. This is a little unknown feature that I know would save a ton of work for my friends and I. I can’t wait to show them. Just get it fixed.
    My system
    - Vista Ultimate 64bit 8gb Ram 3.4ghz Pentium Pro
    - IE 8.0.6001.18865
    - Skype v4.1.0.179
    - Skype Add-on for IE 3.3.0.3928
    - Variety of other IE add-ons from Adobe, Google, McAfee, Microsoft, Techsmith
Here is the error in the app event log
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18865, time stamp 0x4b077416, faulting module SkypeIEPlugin.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4a77e4da, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x04c789e0, process id 0×1890, application start time 0x01ca7a04637770af.
Nice error handling! You should be able to figure this one out. When is the plug-in due for an upgrade? Seems that it hasn’t been rev’d in a while.

    Thanks for your cool app.

    Hey Everyone,
I think I may have fixed this, but I’m not completely sure. Read my post above about my system and the error I was getting when I close IE. I just disabled the most annoying and tremendously obnoxious in-text advertising feature (I’m going to call it malware because I detest it so much) from Vibrant. In the vibrant popup click disable links then click the disable tab and click the link to disable the ads. Close your browser and reopen it. (I had to do it twice because the first time it didn’t take) Note there are a lot of providers of in-text advertising, and I will disable them as I find them in a whack a mole fashion.
I did it this morning and have not had a crash since. I need a lot more testing, to prove that I fixed it but since I disabled the malware from vibrant, it has not crashed since (about 3 hours of browsing) where before it was pretty consistent. Yippee! I’ll let you know if I get another crash, however, a note to the Skype engineers, you may want to look at the in-text advertising malware as a possible conflict.

    This may help others.
I recently did a Skype upgrade which included an add-on for IE8. I then found that my keyboard was not working properly and when I typed in search boxes there were delays and some letters were dropped from the text. I had to go back and correct every sentence.
This did not occurr when I used Firefox or Chrome which made me feel it was a problem related to IE8 .
I tried deleting the Skype IE8 add-on and this fixed the problem immediately.
    I am running Vista.

I have tried to uninstall the Skype toolbar and receive a script error. Tried both from Internet Explorer and from Add/Remove programs. With either option, I receive a script error. I receive an error when starting Windows “Skype Toolbar –There is a problem with the Windows installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personel or package vendor. I tried uninstalling Skype and then the tool bar and still receive the script error.

  32. no problem here I liked the highlighted phone numbers
