Windows Vista and Skype
It has been widely asked question lately, does Skype support Windows Vista or not?
Well to start with the official answer, then it is that Skype does not currently support Windows Vista as of version 3.2.
On the other hand in real life Skype works on Windows Vista pretty ok. It may have problems with audio and video calls on some configurations, mainly due to not mature enough drivers.
You are welcomed to try Skype on Windows Vista, but when doing it first please make sure that you have installed absolutely latest audio, video drivers and updated Windows Vista.
If you encounter problems when using Skype, then please report it to us, so we can solve those issues for you.
You can learn how to leave us issue reports on our Skype for Windows development page or create new thread in appreciate Skype forums.
I have the same problem with IE7 when I have Skype 3.5 downloaded with my Vista OS. It prompts me to close IE7 or restart IE and closes all of my tabs. When I uninstall Skype, IE7 goes back to normal operations. Otherwise, my Skype works fine. Any suggestions?
With Skype 3.5 installed, when I go to IE7, it keeps on opening new SKYPE help files indefinitely until I stop it and close IE7.
Is Microsoft blocking or has Skype not yet figured it out ? You guys should have the source codes by now.
Finally, after months of not being able to use my SKPYE account due to incompatiability with Windows Vista, it finally works. I read a posting somewhere online which suggested uninstalling the audio drives, rebooting, and allowing the drives reinstallation to happen upon the restart. With my fingers crossed I did this, and to my surprise I can now, not only hear a caller, but can be heard on the call.
I just downloaded skype 3.5 on Windows Vista. On a call, I only see a green screen instead of video when communicating with somebody. Though, when I take a snapshot I see the other party perfect!!!
I’ve downloaded skype on a news Vista machine but the installation just stops. What to do?
I am also using window vista, when I newly bought this computer, I could use Skype properly, but then, it crashed with my internet exlporer some days later. When I tried to re-install the old one setup, crash still exsists. When I tried to install 3.5 on the page which technical support instructed me, I experienced the same error:
“C:UserstipuDesktopSkypeSetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application”
When I installed 3.5.0.229, it runs, but crashes with IE again.
What should I do?
I confirm the problem reported by “dkbobo” above on Aug 23:
I have the latest Skype 3.5.0239 on Windows Vista Ultimate.
If I quit Skype I cannot start it up again later, unless I restart my computer.
I can also not log out, e.g. to allow someone else to log in.
The Skype icon stays on in the task bar, and the Skype.exe process in the task manager cannot be stopped (it also keeps more than 65000 k of RAM occupied).
The skypePM.exe Extras Manager process can be ended, but not skype.exe, and I have to restart the computer to start Skype again.
This has been going on since I started using Vista 4 weeks ago. Reinstalling Skype has not solved it.
All drivers in Vista etc are up to date.
Since 3 days I have an additional problem: the web cam freezes after usually 1 or 2 minutes. I can still see the other person’s video, and the Logitech QuickCam software also keeps working, but not with Skype.
I don’t think this is related but for matters of completeness: After reinstalling the newest Logitech drivers, when starting Skype a popup asks whether I want to allow Logitech Communication_Helper.exe to use Skype. I tried both, allowing it, and a day later, not allowing it, both with the same results.
In one case Skype even got stuck when someone called me and the ringtone went on a constant loopback …
As capitalized by “dkbobo” above:
THIS IS THE ONLY PROGRAM I AM EXPERIENCING SUCH SEVERE ERRORS WITH!
This should be fixed ASAP, .. one has to be able to quit an application, and start it again when demanded.
I know you are working hard on updating Skype for Vista, but please inform us, your PAYING and loyal customers, where things stand!
I can absolutely agree with posts above. Exactly same problems as dj-tel. I use Skype for business, and really like it–however, these bugs are very annoying. Please, come up with an effective solution!
Thanks and kind regards, Bob
I am using vista premium, and when i execute Skype
the camera turns on, but then the picture starts to
move like an earth quake, then stops and the continues. also there is an echo when we try to comunicate. and also it takes up 100% of cpu time.
can you please let me know when and if this problem will be corrected.
Thank you much…Ray
I am using Vist Home edition and also found when I downloaded the latest version of skype I was unable to log in and I couldn’t get onto the web. I then unistalled it and used my external hard drive(by Acomdata) which has an older version of Skype (2.0069) on it and I am using Skype directly from that drive not my Dell E520.
Question, if I were to upgrate this verion to 3.5 on the external hard drive would it work?
Thanks
i just bought a new laptop with Vista on it. i had skype 3.2 saved as a file on my external drive so i just installed that.
all went well after tweaking a few settings. good picture, good sound. cant complain.
checked the site to see if there was a newer version and it told me 3.5 is the one to have for vista or another “beta” one i think it was. tried downloading it but got the recurring “not a win32″ so i checked here to see how others were handling it and what was the best one to have, well, i think il be stickin with 3.2. thank god for that error!!
try 3.2 folks. oh and if theres problems with IE7, why not just run mozilla firefox? i find it faster and its definately more secure and also has the bonus of lots of surprisingly handy add-ons.
good luck folks
dave
if 3.2 isnt available anymore email me and il send it to you pyromanic78@hotmail.co.uk
3.5 will not work video and sound with Vista. Uninstall and install 3.2 and it does (although it is not perfect as it ignores sound settings).
having windows vista
everything works ok and whoever I can not hear the other party. the heard me well. When originally downloaded skype it worked fine and the next time I ran into the present problem that they cannot hear me. How can I fix it
Please provide some help, i was pleased to use Skype.
I had no porblem with Skype and XP SP2. After instaling Vista – can not use. During test call the sound is of very poor quality, interrupted and so is with my voice. It looks like Skype is very, very slow. I have the newest drivers and Vista updates. Skype 3.5 and 3.6_Beta have same problems.
What can I do??????

I’m using Vista with Skype and it seems that the memory usage goes all the way up to 100% when I use Skype talk, the other person hears echos and some words are omitted. Is there a way to remedy this, I can provide more data if necessary, but I don’t really know what I need to provide.
I’m using Vista since May, my hardware works well with this new OS, along with the software which I uses before with XP. But my Skype cannot continue during the installation process. So I go to the forum site of Skype, I download the Skype frm the link that was instructed. It’s working. My question is this, why until now Skype does not officially announce that there product can support the new OS which is Vista, inspite that Skype had made several major update since Vista was release to the public, in fact this OS had almost reach 1 yr frm the date it was release? Almost all software manufaturer had upgrade & update there software. Until when? Many of us expecting frm you, thks.

Hey guys, I have a new Dell laptop with Vista, and had the same problem with Skype, in that the anyone I was talking to couldn’t hear me. But it wasn’t skype, it was the microphone jack on new Dell laptops, so I had to re-install the driver off the Dell website and now the microphone works!
Hope this helps someone!
I have downloaded skype on my vista laptop, many times, and it works perfectly after downloading. But as soon I switch the internet connection off, and then restart the computer the next day or whenever, it will not allow me to connect to the internet, so I have to restore my laptop etc…
After installing Skype on my new Acer Aspire9300 with Vista it worked for some weeks. then suddenly the whole installation disappeared. When I try to install Skype again, i get a message from a system: can´t write to package to harddisk due to insufficient place!!! And I have some 120 Gb left!!! Any idea, what´s happened?
I have Vista and my skype will work 50% of the time. People can hear me, see me fine and visa versa.
The problem I am having is this, when I log into Skype my internet stops working and I have to shut skype down and then log into internet explorer multiple times before it will recognize my connection again.
skype version 3.5.0.239 works fine on my Vaio FZ240E with Vista home premium. Both audio and video calls are clear.
I am running Skype v3.6 on an Acer Aspire M1610 desktop running the Vista Home Premium OS with an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 processor running at 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, an SiS Mirage 3 Graphic card, and using a Creative Labs Live! Cam Video IM webcam which supports 30 frames/sec video at 640×480 resolution. No problems with Skype-to-Skype or Skype Out using audio only or when the other party does not have video. However, when connected Skype-to-Skype with a contact using a new iMac having a 2.16GHz Intel Dual Core processor and a built-in 640×480 resolution camera, my connection repeatedly-after about 5 min-was broken and my desktop lockedup requiring a hard reboot.
Almost identical problem: I am running Skype v3.6 on an Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo V5515 laptop running the Vista Business OS with an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2130 processor running at 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM, an SiS Mirage 3 Graphic card, and using a Trust 14881 webcam (Megapixel USB2 Wide Angle Webcam Live WB-6200p). No problems with Skype-to-Skype using audio only or when the other party does not have video. However, when connected Skype-to-Skype my connection repeatedly-after about 5 min-was broken and my desktop lockedup requiring a hard reboot. I tried with different friends some of them with Macs some with Windows Vista – unchanged problem. Please help!!
I am having similar problems as the other Vista users. I installed skype 3.6 and everytime i run it it freezes up my internet connection. When i turn Skype off i reset the connection and the internet works again. but Skype crashes. I have Vista home edition on HP pavilion tx1000. I also have Comcast McAfee, as does one other user that posted. Is there a particular setting i can turn off in McAfee that will allow me to use Skype. I’ve been user Skype for years now and do not want to stop using the program because of Vista.
hey everyone here seem to have similar problem with skype and vista.
but is anybody listening?
common you geeks give us some solution, or tell us who do we divorce, vista or skype?
I have downloaded the latest Skype software for my laptop using Windows Vista Home Basic OS, but everytime I click the software to install it always says”SKYPE is not a valid 32 win bit software”.. What is wrong with SKYPE?..I have downloaded the same for couple of times and the problem persists.

Sorry..and yes I am on Vista Home premium
yo, i got windows vista ultimate and while using skype windows crash(blue screen of death), givin no errors at all, just blue screen. anyone got solution or same problem?
When you are downloading the skype software, you need to press save first and save it to your computer to ensure skype is downloaded and so you don’t receive the win32 application error message

My sound output works properly with Vista, but not my input (using the microphone on the stereo Skype headset). I also keep getting a message which says Skype not being able to hear my audio input. Do I need to install a different microphone driver? If so, where can I find this?
Your assistance is very welcome.

I’m encountering same prob. I can hear other parties even during a conference but they can’t hear me.
Skype is not able to hear my audio input?
HELLLLLPPPPP!!!
I have Skype Pro and am running it on a laptop with Vista.
My skype version is at 3.6.0.248.
My problem is that when I initiate a conference call (normally about 5 people, but sometimes up to 10), I often have very bad sound and lots of static, making it just about useless to use for conferencing. This is very troubling because I rely on it, and had great success with it on my previous laptop running windows XP. (That laptop was stolen and the new one I had to get came with Vista). Needless to say, I blame vista, and assume that skype just does not play well with vista. Does anyone have any suggestions to make skype worth my using now? Or do I just have to wait til skype gets fully ready to work with vista?
I have about $40 of Skype Credit which will be lost if I can’t find a head or handset that works with the Vista Home Premium OS that came with my new desktop (Dell Inspiron 531). My immediate problem is that my VoIP Cyberphone K (Model 652) is not usable (barring a fix that is not only impractical but that I am additionally suspicious of). I am informed by VoIP Voice) that Models 653 and 654 will work, but I live in Costa Rica and my not be able to find this particular make of phone. Can anyone supply me with some alternatives that they know from experience do work with Vista? After which (probably) I can move on to the next obstacle. This is really annoying.
I am having the same problem as leonebarnett. My old laptop running XP worked great with Skype, and now I am having repeated issues with static and sound cutoff with my new Vista laptop. Any help on how to fine tune settings would be appreciated.
Ok. I just have a question about windows vista and saving my audio settings. Everytime i set my audio settings to windows default and i click save, it actually doesnt save those settings. Is there something i can do?? or download? because it doesnt work properly, it doesnt save my settings. So please i need help.
I too have problems with Skype on my Windows Vista. I am unable to save my audio preference on Skype. I’m able to set the microphone volume to 2 bars as my preference, however, I am unable to save this setting. It resets to the default maximum microphone volume each time you engage a new call.
It requires that I manually reset it each time when I need to make a call, otherwise, the volume for the other party will be received at the highest distorted microphone volume from my end.
This would be one way of blowing out the speakers and/or the ear drums of the other party.
Hi,
I’m encountering the same problem as mentioned above: when i first installed skype on my laptop with Vista, and used it, there was no problem. The next day, when i skype another party, they cannot hear me, even though i can hear them. On my pc, running with XP there’s no problem.
Is there a patch already? Pls notify me?
thanks!!!
I too have Vista. According to messages received, I have the latest version of Skype and my VisI ta updates are current. Yet, my Skype continues to close automatically, sending me the error when it does. It closes in the middle of use and it closes when I have it signed on but am not using it.
When I play World of Warcraft I get random disconnects from both Skype and/or WoW.
I find this very very annoying and it actually stops me from using Skype.
No fix what so ever available.
Google hits me for 500K hits, so I am probably not the only one having this issue…
Trying to convince my friends to switch to an other voip program since Skype is still not oficially Vista compatible (shame on you).
I have Vista Home Premium.
my computer (toshiba satellite lap top with windows vista 64bit) is having a auto shutdown with blue sreen due to skype…
the official list of software compatible with vista there isn’t skype…
what’s the problem???? My vista is update… and my lap top is new…
Like others I’m encountering the same problem as mentioned above: I bought a new laptop with Vista in it and downloaded skype at first I didn’t have any problems, but right now I have audio problems, when somemody call me or I call other party I can hear them but they can’t hear me. Is there anything I can change so it can work properly? thanks
Skype continues to be an absolute resource hog on Windows Vista. I have a Dell Precision M60 Laptop that is not the fastest Windows Vista machine, but Vista works in general pretty well with all software installed such as the Office suite 2007. When I launch Skype, it still functions pretty well incl. using the chat feature. However, as soon as I use Skype v3.8 for making phone calls on Windows Vista, the performance monitor tells me that the CPU usage is going up and up and up on Skype.exe until it hits 99. At that point, I can’t understand anyone on the Skype phone any more and nobody can hear me. Ultimately Skype will hang up on the call a few seconds later.
What is Skype doing that it eats up that much CPU power on a Windows Vista machine?
hi there
i have skype 3.8 and it was working fine on vista till a few days back. but now it takes about 20 -30 min to load. and sometimes it does not even load. please suggest what can i do cause i have already paid for the services and cannot use them.
cheers
I too am having similar problems with Skype and Vista. Occasionally it loads, but usually it hangs up half way through start-up. Pretty annoying indeed. Works fine on my old XP equip computer.
Has Skype said anything in response to these seemingly plentiful problems?
Good luck.
Jeff
I’m having the same problems as in the last few posts – am running the latest version of Skype (installed August 2008) on Vista on a new and updated PC. The first few days of use were fine, but now the program almost invariably hangs while opening, listing as ‘not responding’ before it has completed opening. Re-installing Skype did not fix this, nor do repeated restarts of the program or the computer.
Skype is my main communication route, and I am paying to use SkypeOut despite not being able to access the service. Any advice? If not, cancelling my subscription and switching to Gizmo seems the only way forwards.
