Sounds of the shuttle

Last weekend wasn’t really restful this time.

Four flights, three countries, two read books, one expired visa.

Up until now all KDE developers were just abstract nicknames to me, and this is where it started getting real – at the hackathon.

The atmosphere was very inspiring and thought-provoking (including the beer :P).

We discussed the present and went on for planning the future, and were doing it for two days in a row. It was a pleasure to meet such bright people and exchange ideas with them.

There is a picture of almost all participants on [basysblog](http://basysblog.org/index.php/archives/decibel-hackathon).

What this means for Skype? This means we will try to support Telepathy and Decibel as much as we can, and certainly keep our minds open about desktop integration this way.

Its great that you interact with KDE developers and the community as a whole.
In contrast to the Adobe Flash for linux team who are a bunch of f*cktards who just because there were no flash 8-9 for linux thought they were some kind of superstars, whose blog entries were just selfproclaim glory of some sorts and the only interaction they did was telling people “we are not going to open source flash”.

The skype-linux team are like lightyears ahead of Adobe when it comes to interaction with the community, great work

I hope you can accelerate the work for cross platforms. I’d like to earn credits for you with Skype Prime

oscardix: If you engaged with the linux flash player team at all, as opposed to standing around shouting, you’d know they are actually a bunch of great folks – witness the fact you even have a flash 9 player, and shortly Apollo too.

As to the post itself, if you are supporting KDE specific things, does the same go for whatever Gnome uses ?

You should know that Telepathy is freedesktop standard (or is becoming one). Shall I explain more?

  5. wired98 said 2280 days ago

Hi berkus, it would be great if you could spend some words on if and how there will be some skype-telepathy integration. E.g. I will be able to see that my contacts which have skype and are online are actually shown to be online in the telepathy framework even if I do not have running skype at the time being. This would be awesome.
Please keep on doing your good work!

Just wondering, When there will be at least ANY beta, alpha (don’t care) version for linux that SUPPORTS video.
It would be also great if you place there an option to select video source (like in Kopete) since I use an analog camera connected to a TV tuner card and it always sets TV as default input. In win I used to start movie maker, select the correct (composite) source and only then start skype.
    Thanks.

It is possible to download any beta version anywhere even for testing purpose?

  8. dueyfinster said 2269 days ago

Desktop Linux is getting exciting, with KDE at the forefront with standards, usuability, frameworks and overall look (Oxegen, Phonon, Decibel etc). All Gnome come out with is a piece of shit network manager which Suse ported to KDE, and it doesn’t work with cards with OPEN SOURCE DRIVERS, I mean wtf?? /Rant I’m glad your getting on so well with KDE devs, does this mean Skype could possibly go all QT4 for Win, Mac and Lin? That would shorten releases between each, and give us all what we want – feature tandem with the other clients!

Please ! Video, I know you can do it !

  10. pauloerweber said 2258 days ago

I’m glad to know that Skype will have more integration with KDE, specially KDE 4. Keep doing your job with that in mind!

    hi everybody.

I am a blind guy and use skype for windows quite nicely. the latest version had some improvement regarding accessibility. but, I am trying to use ubuntu, but skype there is inaccessible. is there a chance that we see skype for linux support the accessibility bridge (ATSPI) under gnome?

    thanks.

  13. berkus said 2254 days ago

About accessibility: yes, accessibility aids for Skype are planned and will be implemented step by step as we go from 1.4 to the next version.

  14. johannes.schindelin said 2250 days ago

I am sorry, but I cannot get excited about Skype on Linux, however hard I try.

The sound quality on the same machine is substantially worse when using Linux instead of Windows. There is no video support, only talk about it, and I am slowly starting to doubt if it is more than vapourware.

There are huge difficulties with ALSA, and you really have to use the OSS emulation in order to get anything resembling stable operation. For example, if you have ALSA 1.0.11, which is still in widespread use, you will be in big trouble.

What makes this whole experience especially disappointing is that many Linux programs work extremely well. And if not, there are always ways to find out what exactly it is that is not working. With Skype, I had to play around and read forums for at least 20 hours, until I found that Skype does not like older ALSA versions, and prefers the OSS emulation, too. These restrictions do not look to me as implicated by Linux.

And yes, I know what I am talking about. I wrote programs which access sound and video on Linux, and which happen to work exactly as planned.

    Disappointed.

more than a month has passed- any news for linux-only skype users?

  16. nad.himself said 2249 days ago

    still waiting… again n again n again…
checking this blog every couple of days but… :/

  17. jhongy said 2248 days ago

    Hey Berkus,

Are you a team of one? With the billions from the eBay deal, I was wondering how many devs they were sparing for Linux development.

I’ve been a relatively happy skype user for over a year, and a Linux user too — this means that I have had to dual-boot for too long now in order to get video chat.

Well, it’s been a long time since Skype for Linux has shown any signs of life, and, as I always planned, I have finally fully switched to Linux. So now I must switch away from Skype too, and encourage my video chat contacts to do the same (who, perhaps in turn, will advise their contacts…). OpenWengo is developing very rapidly, so they will get the nod for now.

I’ll check back again every now and again, but I’m losing hope fast … if development of Wengo and Skype for Linux continue on their current paths, and the trend for people to move over to Linux on the desktop carries on, things might not look so good for Skype.

  18. calogero80 said 2248 days ago

Berkus, is there any hipotetical release period for the new version of skype… If I’m not wrong, you wrote in a post that a beta release would have been available on the first half of this year. Is this confirmed? We all are really looking for it and I’m checking this forum every day… Keep on with your hard work.

  19. raha_mohebbi said 2246 days ago

This is really annoying now, Today I sent the link of Ekiga to all my friends. They have a Windows Beta version now and it is working better than Skype and I am not joking, forget about OpenWengo. Common Skype I am sure you are better than this. please don’t disappoint us. Video and good voice quality is a must, the old version was a shame really, very bad voice quality and no Video. I think you guys should come up with something really fast, just look at google and their google earth and how great it is. From the other side Gaim will be released soon and google talk will be on linux too. I really see a dark future for Skype on Linux.

  20. raha_mohebbi said 2245 days ago

What happened to the other thread saying that you will release Skype 1.4 next week ? Was it a joke ?

  21. berkus said 2245 days ago

No, it was not a joke.

It was some silly moderation happening here to prevent my communication with you, dear readers.

The post is still alive at _my_ blog here http://nodalpoint.madfire.net/articles/2007/04/26/a-failure

  22. raha_mohebbi said 2245 days ago

It would be really good if you add Linux supported Webcams to this list : http://accessories.skype.com/section?p=4580&secid=39161&et_cid=16&et_lid=2339&et_sub=eng_uk_webcam
I am sure this will allow users to find out what web cam to buy next and will encourage big manufacturers to write Linux drivers.

  23. calogero80 said 2245 days ago

Berkus, next time you want the moderator let you communicate with us try to write “we can not release on friday, because during weekend we could not react fast enough in case of emergency and that is a problem” instead of “we can not release on friday, because during weekend we can not wipe your a_s_s in case of emergency”. Keep on with your secret hard work.

I hope that an new skype release for linux will be ready soon. I would like to use web cam with kubunt!

  26. berkus said 2244 days ago

    > Berkus, next time you want the moderator let you communicate with us try to write

It was a typo. Keys too close on the keyboard.

I’m sure you was seriously offended tho.

  27. polrus said 2242 days ago
