Send SMS from Address Book
With the launch of Skype version 2.5 for Mac more and more people will hopefully discover the usefulness of sending SMS via Skype. This morning I discovered really simple (but very well hidden) way to send SMS messages to contacts in my Mac’s Address Book.
Simply click on their mobile number tab in their contact card (see the screenshot below) and the last choice in the drop down list is “Send SMS with Skype”. No fiddling with copy-paste or adding new contacts. Click and send.

You have to hold down the control key when you click on the mobile phone number for this drop down list to appear.
Yes, that works too, but easier to click on the word “mobile” since that works with normal left-click.
Nice feature, but all Mac-users I know agree that Skype (which is currently really a great tool) will only become the perfect tool once you integrate a full address book synchronization / integration with contact / userpic integration…
It only works with Address Book, not Entourage Please upgrade to include Entourage.
Good idea, but if you could send txt messages from a widget that would be amazing. Skype’s UI for sending txts is clunky.
Unfortunately not work for me on Leopard 10.5.2 with Skype 2.7.0.257. On Tiger 10.4.11 everything ok…
yep, bizarre, works fine on my laptop but not on my desktop – must be some clash somewhere that I can’t identify. VERY annoying as this is THE way I send SMS! HELP SKYPE… Please address this issue…
Note this fails if the phone number is formatted with spaces, or does not include the country code. So the number needs to be: +6412345678 for example.
Be aware the auto formatter in Address book might add spaces or brackets for you.
I’m using version 2.8 beta, and this affected earlier versions too.
Here’s an apple script that works with incorrectly formatted numbers:
