The iPhone is a Skype phone

Over the past few weeks, there was a lot of craze around iPhone. Will it be from Apple? Will it do this and that? Oh my, all the buzz, conspiracies, theories and speculations…

Today, the mystery is solved. Turns out the iPhone is just a series of Internet phones, most of them for Skype, from our buddies over at Linksys. [Read more on our Gear blog.](http://blogs.skype.com/sites/skypegear/2006/12/new_linksys_wifi_and_cordless.html) According to [engadget](http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/18/cisco-not-apple-announces-iphone-branded-voip-phones/), Cisco had trademarked “iPhone” somewhere in the 90s. And so they will be talking about “Applephone” from now on, whatever and whenever that may be. Until then, we’ll be talking with our Skype iPhones.

    Thats nice!
I had hitherto been thinking that Apple will be the one to launch iPhones. Good you beat them to it.

For now, its Skype all the way! Congrats

    Err… not quite.

Have you been to Apple today?

What I want to know is how long it will take to get a Skype Widget ready for the iPhone.

So, when will a Skype app be ready for the Apple iPhone?

  5. ben-parsons said 2181 days ago

I guess, like josephmoore, a lot of people are going to be wondering if/when Skype software will be available on the APPLE iPhone?

  6. bradybd said 2177 days ago

Yes sir. I am wondering as well. When will Skype be releasing an iPhone application? Hmmm?

uh… mr. “apple Corp”, if you google it you’ll see that apple had to pay huge bucks to use the name iphone!

    -just sayin’

There will not be skype for iphone before years!! Apple has signed deals with carriers in the US and Europe and will make money out of it. You can be sure that the contracts include the obligation for Apple to block and not launch any skype software on the iphone… it is the biggest competitor of those carriers…

Correction People… I have been using Skype on my iPhone and I LOVE IT VERY MUCH. Let put it this way, you would need an iPhone, a mobile number, skyout account or skype credit to make it work for you. And “YES” is an APP for the iPhone Safari. You will not be able to make free calls like you would do on skype messenger, because it more focus on skypeout when making a call… the other features are the same, such as chatting and stuff… (brief description what iphone skype does)… you see one of your contacts online you want to call them… click on their name… two opitions pops up.. “call” & “chat”… you decide to call, the iphone mobile number you add on the login will call you while calling the contact… so you can talk to the person like it was a telephone… but again not free… because is similar to a skypeout set up… if you interested i will give people the site to add on your iphone bookmark… i will be back at the night times to see any interested people care to experience skype on their own iphone…. AGAIN SKYPE ON IPHONE IS HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Can someone (like rarebreednyc, for example) fill me in on how to access skype on my iPhone? s4iphone.com isn’t doing anything for me, as I can’t get past the sign-in process (doesn’t seem to support safari yet?)

I’ve got skype on my iPhone! Great! Only weird thing is that the contacts which I have put on my laptop in “blocked users” do appear amongst my chosen contacts in my iPhone, why is that? I don’t want the blocked users on my iPhone! ‘Cos I don’t want them to call me on my iPhone! Does anyone know how to change this?
    Thanks!

But.. it’s better to use a native widget than this thing, plus i kinda not trust the s4 site.. it says free and stuff, like 10 days, but everything is paid-to-use, plus it’s like a third party company, not the real thing (skype.com), so why trust’em with our credits,info,numbers,etc..?

I just don’t trust’em and i’m not gonna use it on my iphone..

Better to use the new Jajah for iphone (iphone.jajah.com) than this, smelling-bad non-so-trusted, thing!

  19. giddie14 said 2003 days ago

Hi, not to sure what i am doing wrong but every time i call one of my contact and there is no answer, i than hang up but i still incur a fee! 22 English pence. would that be correct!!

  23. costynvd said 1951 days ago

Instructions to log in to Skype with your Apple iPhone using the webservice s4iphone.com (there is no official Skype app for the iPhone afaik (as of today Feb 14 2008)).

    * Open Safari
    * Enter the URL: s4iphone.com
    * Enter your Skype login details.

So what about the NEW “SDK” from apple….if you watch the keynote..there you can see that AOL build the AIM application (NO Web-APP)… I think now it would be possible for SKYPE to build there own Application for the iPhone…and if they sell it for $ 1.- or so…

The iPhone 2.0 Software with App Store (and iPhone 3G) is finally released. I was disappointed on not finding Skype VoIP on the list. I understood, it wasn’t promised. What really disappointed me was a corporate response given to me.

Last night, when I made a suggestion for VoIP, they mentioned the iPhone Trademark first, then the second conflict is because of the pricing. As in, Apple won’t just let Skype have the 70% of the profits, Apple wants a fair share in VoIP. They did some tru phone service because Apple is getting 50% of the profits earned by that company per minute the user spends. Quite a move.

I too am disappointed about Skype not being available for the iPhone. There is the Skype +IM but it only lets you chat (text) from overseas while using WiFi. If you want to talk you have to connect through the network (roam!). Think about it – that’s just crazy – if I am going to pay the exorbitant roaming fees when in Shanghai for example I might as well make a regular iPhone call instead of doing it through Skype – after all the roaming fees would be the same! Now, you can text using WiFi but that’s not good enough for me…

I noticed that iPhone App Store now offers Truphone which is basically what we want for Skype – cheap voice calls through WiFi and NOT network when overseas. I’ve been a Skype customer for several years and will wait a little longer hoping they get their act together but if they don’t improve the Skype+IM to allow voice calls via WiFi instead of the network I’ll switch from Skype all together…

Note – connecting through the network when using Skype when in the US works very well – after all, unlimited internet usage is included in the plan. However, when overseas (where I am at least 2 weeks every month) you should be able to Skype via WiFi – roaming is very expensive in most countries.

Now that I’ve got a “legal” iPhone I thought Skype was a natural for the iPhone and I’ve been waiting for the App to appear on the Apple Apps Store. No Show!

People on various blogs were saying it was Apple holding it up becasuse of their connections to mobile service providers. Then I saw reference to people using VOIP on iPhones. I downloaded the Truphone App, paid some cash and bingo I’m making international calls on my iPhone.

I don’t think it is as good as Skype is on my Mac but it does work. I’d happily use Skype if there was an App, in the meantime I’m using Truphone.

It proves to me there is no Apple conspiracy to keep Skype off the iPhone.

Skype get your act together so I can pay you guys for VOIP on iPhone!

Of course if Skype opened up its protocol properly, by now some enterprising dude would of done the hard work for skype…..

I’ve got the dev kit here, and the skills. But I have no idea how this whacky protocol works! Open it up skype!
