Video goes gold

Skype for Mac 2.0 goes gold today, which means that we’ve tested it, you’ve tested it and we all agree that it does a pretty good job. Download it now and video call your friends, family, colleagues or anyone else you’d like to see face to face. Remember not only does it work with other Mac users but it also works with Windows users too. That means even more people for you to video call with.

We’ve improved the video quality and made changes so that video calling can now work on older systems allowing more of our Mac community can use it.

Thanks for all your feedback and help to improve the quality of video throughout the beta. A lot of you have sent in your stories on how you’re using Mac 2.0 to get face to face with far flung friends and relatives and we’re delighted we can help to bring you all closer together. Many of you also told us that you’re using video calls with business colleagues across the globe or to see your family back home when you’re away with work. If you have any more stories you’d like to share with us please email them to stories@skype.net.

I have a G4 Powerbook and want to get a webcam to make video calls with Skype. Does anyone know what my options are? I don’t want to buy a camera that will not work with Skype. The website seems to indicate that there aren’t Mac/Skype compatible webcams (or at least they have not been tested and approved yet), but you all who are unhappy with the new video options apparently have cameras that work…what are they? Does iSight work?

I have an iBook G4 and a Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000. While I’ve gotten the camera to work with a program called macam, Skype still fails to recognize it properly. It knows I have a camera and shows its name, but the picture is a black screen with some unitelligible white writing in the upper right-hand corner. What’s going on? Do you think it’s just my webcam and that I need a newer one? Please help!

Also, Skype’s ability to turn off iTunes when you receive or make a call went from perfect to horrible with version 2.0. My music keeps playing for minutes–what happened? I would love to get that back to how it was.

Three iMacs: one on 10.3.9, the others on 10.4.8. One of the latter is Intel C2D with webcam. All have Skype 2.0.0.6.
iSight worked instantly and perfectly on the Intel machine as did Skype after downgrading to 2.0.0.6
On the other two, one has a Skype video icon, the other does not.
Using Philips SPC900NC webcam with SourceForge/Macam driver as suggested by Skype: great video but not recognised on Skype.
Also, cant add contact on either of the non-intel machines: add button not highlighted on one and, on the other, cant select a country code.
I know its Beta but, come on!
Our fourth iMac is in Madrid, so maybe we will have better luck there?

I’m on a PC and my mom is on a an iBook G4. She can video call other macs and see my video but i can’t see video from her on my PC. it seems like my version of skype doesn’t know she has a camera. Anyone else had this problem?

    On G4 Mac – skype 2.0.0.6.
When in preferences, I can see myself on webcam, all options set for viewing.
    Close prefs and i disappear!
And no-one else can see me.
Is this a driver issue or something else?
Any advice greatly appreciated, as confused…

I have a Phillips SPC900NC with macam and it works fine in the preferences window of Skype. However, as soon as I get into a call, all I get is a black screen with a bit of illigible writing in the top right corner (top left in the receiver’s window). I have a Mac G5 with OSX 10.4.11 and Skype 2.7.0.330, but the problem was the same with previous versions. However, Skype and the camera work fine with my older Mac G4 powerbook with same OS/Skype version/ADSL connection. Any suggestion? I can send a screen dump of the white on black error message if necessary. Thanks.

Sounds like a driver problem – have you installed the latest drivers for the webcam?

Having problems with my video not being accepting by Skype. I have the latest (in the last month) Mac and Skype versions. Skype Help for video conferencing brings up Mac Help which states I need to set up a Mobile Me, AOL or AOL Instant message account for video to work. I have an AT&T DSL account and the built in camera works when I use Photo Booth. Any suggestions?
