Did You Sign Up–For Free SkypeOut?
The fine year of 2006 will be over before we know it, and we’re curious as to how many Skypers out there signed up this year as a result of our free SkypeOut in North America promotion.

are you referring to the free calling of land lines or an actual skpe out number?
They mean the free SkypeOut calls to landlines and mobiles. I think you were thinking of SkypeIn numbers.

It was/is a very nice promo – I mean the free landline/cell/VoIP calls in North America.
I’m still waiting for SkypeIn Canada. I’m ready to try it from day 1, as I already dropped my landline almost 2 years ago and I’m using only cellphone(s).

Michael Gartenberg from Jupiter Research spotted this odd phone service for making free international calls, you call a number in Iowa (712-858-8883) and according to the site… “When the gateway answers, enter 011 then the country code and number you want to reach (mobile users, do not hit SEND – the call will go through on it’s own). Wait a few moments for your call to ring through and then enjoy your free call.”[via] – Link.
As Michael said, if there’s a catch, I can’t find one either (I called our MAKE Japan office, worked fine) – so, get your phone phreak on if you want to dabble and make some free international calls.
Here’s a how-to of sorts so you don’t need to pay for the Iowa call… use Skype to make a free local call to the Iowa # (in the USA calls are free within the USA) then just dial out internationally for free… Skype on a Mac sometimes has DTMF issues, but usually on a PC it works fine – try it out and post on up in the comments. I tried using Project Gizmo and it worked fine too…

Won’t lie… yep. SkypeOut was a huge reason I started to turn over to mostly Skype, even went out and bought an USB phone and headphone for the main computer and laptop (respectively).
The promotion – which sounds like it’s going to end by the chosen wording in this blog – was the main reason I decided to finally go that way.
Well that and a mobile PC version while I travel, I can still IM people with a client that I thought worked much better than Agile’s multi-IM client as well as not exactly liking AIM or MSN on the Windows Mobile platform.
I personally felt at first downloading Skype will be like msn , yahoo, etc but let me reassure you there is a big difference. Espacially with skype having a better quality. When I talk on the mic I mistaken for being on the phone because not only is it clear but without hearing echos or anything.
You guys heart your Canadian neighbours? Where are our SkypeIn numbers?
And I’d like to remind you guys that if you’re coming up here with SkypeIn, not all calls within an area code are local…. us 613ers who aren’t in Ottawa always get burned by this.
I’ve been realding a few blogs about people who have not been able to place SkypeOut calls. I, myself have tried but it asks me to purchase credits. In keeping with the latest info that SkypeOut calls will be free till the end of 2006, I was willing to purchase some just to try it out and had problems. I have not received the email giving me the confirmation code yet the email addy is correct. How does one get past this?
Bummer…I’m just hearing about this now because I was actually on the site trying to figure out how to do SkypeIn (and what it meant) and voicemail. Anyway, atleast I have another two months to use the promo.
Just wondering–how did you guys hear about the offer?

I no longer have a real phone line. I use skype out when I am home and my cell for emergencies.
You love Skype customers? I have been a Skype customer for years. I like the service. This morning I noticed that Skype charges an exchange rate for changing currency within Skype. I bought Skype credit in Euros originally and decided to change my currency to US Dollars. The transaction worked fine.. €28.45 to $36.75USD. Then I thought out of curiousity I would look at what the exchange would be back to a Euro currency. The “select your preferred currency screen” stated $36.75 could be changed back to €27.34. Why is this? Skype stores the credit in virtual money in it’s computers. Why is Skype charging an “invisible” service fee for merely changing currency basis? It requires no interaction by human or bank intervention.. why the additional charge? It is only about one USD dollar, but multiply this by potentially thousands of people who change their currency basis and Skype has made thousands or potentially millions in money that is not disclosed to the user that they have been charged by Skype for just changing their currency basis?
