Skype at the London Mac Users Group

Living and working in London, I thought it’d be worthwhile to check out the local mac ‘scene’, so I looked up the London Mac Users Group (LMUG). Now I’ve been to meetings like these before – 2600 Sydney, London but this the first time I’ve been to one specifically about a particular product – Mac.

It was good to see everyone so keen about Mac and Mac related products, and when they found out I worked for Skype they were keen to get me to lead a Special Interest Group (SIG) on Skype for Mac. I fielded plenty of questions about Skype for Mac and Skype in general – ranging from “What is Skype?” to fairly technical discussions about the workings of Skype.

Outside the SIG I ran, they discussed annoucements in the Mac space, and ran an open discussion for people with general Mac questions which was quite helpful for those who weren’t overly technically versed. So if you’re in London and interested in some of the sessions they run, check out the LMUG, they are a good (non profit) bunch. As far as I know they run on the second monday of every month and charge £3 for non-members. There was also a raffle for a wireless Mighty Mouse, which I didn’t win :(

    Hello,

First video confcall with a PC, full succes. A new alternative to Ichat
With a wifi connection and a laptop, it is even possible to move…
    Bravo
Could you check why, when we import telephone contact from “book adress” it does not give the home / work / mobile telephone informations as it used to be?

When will you offer multi video confcall (joke)?

    Hihi! *waves and smiles*

I’m new here but I’ve been reading your posts on the Skype forums and your personal blog, Ryan. I think it’s great what you’re doing: sounds like you’re so enthused about your occupation too, which is *fantastique* and *priceless*.

Not that this is related and don’t let me burden you, but I just wanted to raise notice on:

“Gain Control” and “Echo Cancellation” checkboxes missing from latest Skype
    http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=62610

Summarizing numerous threads with problems related to the missingness!

Maybe you’re already aware; ifso, please pardon the redundancy, but I searched and didn’t find any other mention. Soooo that’s why I hope Input Volume will be more settled if this can be fixed soon.

Here’s a skype for mac widget idea. How about a skype widget that shows the online status of the contacts in my contact list. That way I can easily see who is online in both programs, without crowding my desktop.
There are a number of widgets that do this available for iChat, why not Skype?

    Ryan,

Glad you had a chance to see what a Mac User Group is all about. I sent a note to your Press department asking if there were folks like you in the US, specifically in the Chicago area. We have about 125 folk who come to our monthly meetings and, I’m sure, they would certainly enjoy hearing about SKYPE!

Hope to hear from you! Sanfordd6@comcast.net

I keep trying to useSKYPE to contact my daughter in the UK (I live in Canada) there seems to be a fair amount of sound feedback and a sound delay in order of about one second. She has a brand new PC of some kind and I am runnig OS 10.4.8 on my PPC MAC MINI (512 RAM), its a couple of years old and the 2,5beta version of the SKYPE application. We both have a middle of the road high speed connect and I believe (true for me) we both have two computers connected to the internet through routers.
Any suggestions/comments how we may be able to inprove signal speed and get rid of the feed back noise?

    Barrie
