Disco Powerbook/MacBook
Once again, another cool thing that I thought had to be shared with you all!
Use your Powerbook/MacBook’s keyboard backlight as a visualizer in iTunes!
Get it from here
And as it says on that page about the program, “This program comes with no warranty. It may crash iTunes, kill your cat or paint your PowerBook beige.”
– Ryan.
When do we get video again?
yeah – getting video would be a thrill, so:
dont play around with your backlights!
For goodness sake guys this is frustrating to say the least. Give us all a break if it continues I will stop clicking on the Comments link. This is a Mac Blog not a Video blog. We all want a new version out but we want also news on Skype and the mac not necessarily pertaining to this momentary obsession.
video or not video, what does this have to do with Skype at all anyway? we subscribed this rss feed and check this blog to know about Skype for Mac stuff, not Skype or Mac stuff. the ‘f’ is important.
A video is now available on the plugin web site. Enjoy.

When will we get Video for the Mac?
It’s a pretty big thing for us, and the only reason the whole family hasn’t switched from AIM.
yeah : I’m jumping every time I see a new entry on this blog, hoping it’s about Skype with video for Mac.
I’ve been disappointed again
Video. Video. Video. Video. Video. Video.
Got the hint? All we want is to be treated equally to those Windows folk. I switched to Mac a few months ago… love it, ain’t ever going back to the dark side, but I get a bit ticked at “cross-platform” apps that don’t have at least the same features as our PC brethren!
Cmon guys! Video!
Jumping on the dog pile just for the sake of jumping on is the wrong thing to do. But in this case, I agree on one thing – we don’t care about general mac news or info from the skype blog. We can get that anywhere – and already do. I knew about this visualizer without ever having to read the skype blog.
The skype mac blog should be about news for skype on the mac. It’s that simple.
Right now, us mac users are frustrated about the state of skype on the mac. Personally, besides video, I’m frustrated that there’s no way to turn off automatic gain control on audio inputs. I have a nice Samson C01U USB condenser mic I’d like to use for podcasting, but can’t when using skype because skype makes the input volume jump up to max volume without any way of overriding it. I’ve read about others that have the same problem with certain USB mics, and it ONLY HAPPENS with skype.
So personally, I don’t care about stupid hacks that no one will ever use except a couple dorks with too much time on their hands. I want the functionality of the windows version, and I want the functionality that IS in the mac version now to work correctly without causing audio problems that no other apps on the mac seem to cause.
Sorry to be blunt, but to the skype mac team: stick to the subject and work on what’s important. The rest is chaff we don’t need and not the wheat we do.
Agreed — and realize, Mac Skype team, that once video ships, all sins will be forgiven.
I am also one of those many Mac users who’ve been waiting in frustration for video to be added to Skype for the Mac. I am sure that if that hasn’t happened already there must be good reasons. I mean, the Skype development team must realize that we are all running out of patience, and as we run out of patience we look around for other applications that deliver already what Skype has been promising for months.
For example, today I have discovered sightspeed (www.sightspeed.com) which seems to provide the same functionality of Skype, but with in addition video capability and interoperability across platforms.
Who knows, maybe from now on I’ll just use that one. After all, I am also tired of checking this blog regularly, only to feel jerked around or “informed” of stuff I could not care less about.
OK, I’m going to add my share on the “video” thing.
Like someone else here said, I’m sure there’s a reason why the video feature is lagging on the Mac (one of them must have been for some time the beta status of this feature on the Windows platform). And I’ve been supportive of the Mac team so far, most of all because I don’t think any piece of software is a right. Skype can do what they want, even drop Mac and Linux if they want, it’s THEIR right.
Now, what is beginning to put my patience to the test is the coming out of Live Messenger… not for the Mac either, and will it ever be?
With Skype a popular and famous alternative, I could tell my friends: ok, no video between you and me through Messenger, but we can still do it with Skype. A thing you can’t say with other “exotic” solutions like the promising SightSpeed, because my friends (and professional contacts) will sort of “not believe in it” as an alternative.
So, please: we don’t even need to know at what stage of development you are! For me, all I need is reassurance: is video on the Mac even a project? Are you dropping it for all platforms but Windows?
A big statement, not a date, is what we need now!
Hey cimmyx, thanks for the heads-up on Sightspeed. I just downloaded it to both my Mac and the family PC and it works a treat… the video quality coming from the iSight camera is excellent! Finally, I can do video calling to friends with PCs! A pity its not via Skype, as I really quite like Skype, but it’s good to see that somebody else is supporting us with video now.
Thanks again!
Like some others, I’d really appreciate hearing more about Skype for Mac on this blog, rather than just general Mac news. And yes, I’m still checking here regularly for the holy grail of Skype video for Mac in particular. Thanks to the Skype team for all you are doing though.
Not really certain why the keyboard backlight visualizer is a post in the Skype for Mac blog?
As if I want to see my computer pulsate with light as the person I’m skyping with talks?? That’s creepy.
I’d like to see a post that talks about hardware/software innovations, but related to Skype. I think it just makes sense.
It amuses me that I have to go to other blogs to find out that a unstable version of Skype for Mac with video has leaked.
No, you shouldn’t use it, but you know, this blog right here might be a good place to say that.
THX for all, you have my support.
I just started using Skype on Mac, after having been using it on Windows for awhile. In some respects, it feels a lot more elegant! Video would be a nice addition, and I also would like to see an Input Volume that doesn’t get tampered with, as macnupodcast mentioned–I’m having some very frustrating problems with that.
i just got my sype acount on my macbook and my freinds take snapshots and i dont no how any one no how to take pics?
