You can preload the new Dell XPS Mobile Systems with Skype

Skype and Dell have teamed up to make it easy to stay in touch. Today, Skype announced an agreement with Dell, the world’s largest maker of personal computers, to ship Skype software with new Dell™ XPS™ mobile systems – the XPS M1210 and XPS M2010

The agreement will allow Dell to provide its customers with easy access to Skype’s voice and video Internet calling software. Dell will be able to pre-load Skype on the XPS 2010, a unique mobile entertainment system featuring a 20.1-inch high-definition display with integrated webcam. The XPS 1210 can be configured with Skype as part of an optional audio-video communications package that also includes an integrated rotating webcam, noise-isolation earbuds and mobile broadband capability.

Dell has come up with a real innovative solution for the market segment that wants a portable Desktop powered solution that has trend-setting eye appeal.

Integrating the Skype Client simply adds the value of a compelling and ubiquitous communications solution. It is always good news for the customer when major players combine their innovations for the benefit of the customer.

One of the reasons I ordered the Dell XPS M1210 over other compact laptops was the ability to utilise the multimedia offerings of this model for VoIP….something that is a regular part of daily life in our household. I am disapointed however to discover that using the webcam and mic prevents the use of disk imaging (such as D-tools) to read ISO’s as it prevents the system from booting up due to a conflict. What a let down. A pity this conflict wasnt resolved before touting the solution as a multimedia package that can also keep mobile gamers interested too.

Even though Skype came pre-installed on my new Dell XPS M1210, I found it did not work with the particular Logitec web-cam installed. I’ve spent many hours trying to resolve this problem both with Dell techs and on my own, but no fix has been found other than to un-install the logitec camera. I too am disappointed that this problem was not discovered and remedied before all the hype.
