Skype 1.4.0.39 – where did it go?

Skype for Mac 1.4.0.39 was released yesterday, but was pulled off skype.com a few hours later. We made a mistake during the publishing processes which resulted in a non-working version being released. We’re sorry if this caused trouble for anyone – it won’t happen again.

We’re now working hard on making sure we have a working release out there asap, and will let you know here once it’s done. In the meantime, you should use the latest version which can be downloaded from skype.com.

To manage expectations: 1.4.0.39 is an update to the current version 1.4.0.35. It does not include video.

THX for the fast reaction… We are waiting the new one. ;o) – Merci pour la réaction rapide… Nous attendons la nouvelle update. ;o)

Inside the broken 1.4.0.39 package there is a Video icon (similar to the windows one), and a folder named “VideoPreferences.nib”!
    Are you telling us lies?

Of course I am jocking. Thanks for the great job you are doing.

So Skype posted a borked .39 version–it could happen to anyone I suppose BUT now it is almost 48 hours since the broken .dmg was pulled and you still haven’t replaced it with a good version! Does this mean you only had one master? Unlikely, so does it mean the posted version had not been properly beta tested and some quick recoding is under way.
Whatever the case, it is starting to look unprofessional.
Skype, you need to serve your Mac customers better than this.
Worse, there are no admins on the Mac OS X help forum telling anyone what is going on. That’s breaking the first rule of PR. Every company has accidents but customers are likely to be more forgiving if you keep them informed, explain what you are doing to solve the problem and give an estimate of when service will return to normal. You are supposed to be a communications facilitator but Skype PR for Mac has to be one of the worst.
Sorry for for the harsh judgment but really ….

I figured it would be less than a day until the new, fixed build was out, but I’m dying here waiting…can you give us an indication of how much longer it’s likely to be (i.e. days, weeks, months)?

    Thanks!

Help! After installing the .39 UB Rosetta has completley stopped working! I can’t open any PPC apps!

  7. henrikroback said 2578 days ago

    Tragic… really…

  8. chaseds said 2577 days ago

Umm….the word for this isn’t “tragic”. It’s “figures”, “typical”, or “pathetic”. It figures that once Mac users finally receive an update, it’s pulled because of publishing problems and still isn’t fixed 5 days later. It’s typical because this is what we’ve come to expect from the Skype Mac team. Nothing but tight lips all around while the Windows team charges on ahead. And it’s PATHETIC because the VERY LEAST you can do is explain to your customers why it is that you can’t say anything about the new version of Skype with video or even release expectations about a FRIGGING POINT RELEASE. But no, you guys go on about it like kids in a clubhouse keeping a secret instead of responsible and mature adults relating to others intelligently. I don’t know what the hell you’re thinking, but here’s a tip which will save us all a lot of aggravation: START INFORMING YOUR CUSTOMERS.

  9. jawestonskype said 2577 days ago

    chaseds,

Skype has already informed us that the Mac video version of Skype is on track for release during the second calendar quarter. That’s being a lot more forthcoming than Apple has been about the future of iChat AV video connections to PC users.

  10. henrikroback said 2577 days ago

okay, mabye were a bit hard now. Im sure that the Mac-crew are trying to give us a good product.

The situation would be unacceptable if Skype was a software you paid money for using, but you dont.

  11. gd-jac said 2577 days ago

I concur, always said give them space they seem to be putting their act together for the Mac. Unfortunate ” accidents ” do happen however a more pro-active communication would help.

This said. Euh I do pay (albeit not much) – SkypeIn and SkypeOut. This is however another issue that has nothing to do with the Mac. The business model chosen and the service that goes with it. I reckon Skype and all the others sooner or later when the industry ” mature ” will have to do a ” choice ” (i.e. different level of services and feature according to the user subscription, etc.) and act accordingly.

Would love to hear an update on progress…it’s been almost a week since the botched release.

  13. skypeonmacuser said 2575 days ago

What is this mysterious version 1.4.0.35 which appeared today on the download page, but claims to be new by April 19?

With the experiences we had with 1.4.0.39/40, I’ll rather keep my hands off…

BTW: The iSight I bought after you released Skype 2.0 for Win is starting to get moldy

  14. etorsten said 2575 days ago

    Hi,

I´m wondering a little bit. Today Skype released version 2.5.0.72 for PC…
And the Mac team seems still far behind with vers. 1.4.x

Hmm, I would like to heaer from you, that you will close this gap to the PC-version.

  15. paulburnhill said 2575 days ago

What with 2.5 beta for Windows out, any news on a Mac beta and will it have 2.5 or just 2.0 features?

  16. vanastasis said 2575 days ago

    Hi,

i’m assuming now that windows has beta 2.5 out the all us mac users “will expect” the same support and waiting for atleast version 2. but you could supprise us with a mac version 2.5 “wow” & video.

its becoming a joke now. so much support for windows yet nothing really for mac. how long will this go on for ?

as a communication company any feed back on mac products would be nice. i.e Skype for mac with video this month, next month etc… (give us some dates)

we are all still here waiting for something. it really can’t take this long.

  17. donie.kelly said 2574 days ago

So will the next version be a universal application?
    Thanks

  18. skypeonmacuser said 2574 days ago

Yes, it will be universal since the dubious version 1.4.0.39 was universal, too.

  19. efeingold said 2574 days ago

For the love of all that’s holy…please, please, please, give us the universal version, even if it’s buggy. I need to run VNC to a Windows computer to use Skype now, and that’s unbelivably painful. I’m a developer, so I’m happy to take an internal version, beta, alpha, as long as the damn thing starts up I’ll be happy.

  20. dr.maxx said 2573 days ago

Keep on waiting for new version…

  21. sspooner said 2573 days ago

    Hi Mac team !

Can we have some sort of update on the ETA of the Universal binary release ?
I’d love to this even 1.4 run natively on an Intel mac, running under Rosetta really chews up memory.

    Best regards,

    Simon.

  22. vanastasis said 2573 days ago

Please can you give us some type of information ???

if we had a date we would feel alot better, its not knowing is whats the pain.

just give us some type of date please.

    Vas

P.S. would be happy to try beta version

  23. mathieutozer said 2571 days ago

    Will it include SMS? Pleaaasse!?

  24. henrikroback said 2571 days ago

Yes, it will include SMS in Beta 2.5 for Mac and will be released at 18 September 2009. Stay tuned.

    ;-)

  25. constantinosamiridis said 2570 days ago

18 september, what shall we do untill that?!?!?!?!!!?!?

Come on dev team, if you give us skype video for mac in a few days i will give you candy

  26. puurtuur said 2569 days ago

Eh, constantinosamiridis, you might want to look at the year henrikroback gave in his comment. It was a joke.

Yes, it’s been some weeks since the original flawed UB version of Skype was pulled and though it is commendable that people are working so hard that they can’t find the time to blog about process, it sort of defeats the purpose of a blog not to post updates once a week or so.

However, anything posted here now that doesn’t equal “Skype for Mac 2.5 is out now with video and everything else that you have wished for. Ever.” will just result in another sh1tstorm of complaints, bemoanings and thinly veiled threats, so.. we can only respect the radio silence and have faith in Skype Mac Team’s capabilities. And so far, they’ve done a pretty good job.

Give it some time. Not forever, but a while.

  27. jchodakowski said 2568 days ago

Might as well rename this thread:

Mac Development Team – Where did they go?

No beta? No word? No news? No blog entries? Do you still have jobs at eBay?

As for Skype – folks, you should skip video. Voice was the strong suit of Skype and you should _always_ play to your strengths. Now you’re dissing the mac community by not fixing the current version, releasing non-working (read as: untested) versions, and instead hammering away on a 2.x version which we can’t even beta, even though the Windows community routinely gets betas from you.

This is a real dissapointment from a product that started off so well. I’ve paid for a number of Skype services but that will likely end. Good products at the end of the day require good support, and sadly I’ve seen nothing resembling support for Macintosh.

Let’s see something stripped of video and just as exciting as the early days of Skype with amazing p2p sound quality.
