eBay DevCon – Session List

Burrrr it’s a cold day today.

Today I am doing nothing but trying to nail down some issues for the eBay DevCon.

At the conference we will have a class room for 25 people and will be running 2 different hands on training labs:

Getting started building Skype applications

Using the App2App messaging API

We are writing the labs, that’s the easy bit.
The challenges come with what software to install on the machines, what development environment to use and getting hold of headphones.

Since we will share a training room with the PayPal guys, we need to ensure our lab doesn’t break theirs. Having done this many times in the past you’d be surprised at what can go wrong when you have several people running different labs from the same machine.

As well as the hand on training we also have a whole technical track dedicated to Skype development.

The sessions are:

Opportunities for Developers using Skypes API

Skype Certified! The 5Ws

The Skype ActiveX Components: Skype Development on Steroids

The Skype Application to Application Messaging API (App2App)

Building Voice Applications Using Voice XML

Servers and Plugins – The future of the Skype API

Using Skype to improve Buyer/Seller communication

I’m very excited about these sessions as not only will they cover in-depth technical information you can’t get anywhere else and won’t have heard before. The speakers will be the Program Manager or Developer responsible for these technologies. In other words, these guys are the bees knees.

You can get full description of all the tracks by visiting:
eBay Developer Conference.

Linux/Mac

Incidentally thanks for responding yesterday to my question about Linux & Mac development, I have passed your response on and I will chase it up.

It seems that your link does not work. Did you plan to redirect us to ‘http://www.ebaydevcon.com/’?
Do you think that the Skype presentations will be made available after the June 10-12 session?

Any plan to make such conference in Europe? euh … what about … France?

    Regards,

    Philippe

    Hi Philippe,

sorry about that, copy and paste hosed the URL. I have fixed it in the blog and it should take you to

    http://www.ebaydevcon.com/skype1/tracks/keynote

We will make our slides availiable yes.

As for a European conference, we would love to do one at some point in the future. But I have no dates or firm commitment on this yet.

Am glad you’re chasing up the Linux stuff, Lester, and hope to see more regular updates on the Linux side of development going on from here..

1.2.0.18 on Linux vs. 2.5.x on Windows – there’s a lot of people getting shirty about it. Skype currently has an advantage in that it works seamlessly through most firewalls, and that it has multiplatform (albeit dated) support.

The moment that software groups like the GAIM developers merge video and voice support into their software (GAIM is a multiprotocol instant messaging client for YIM, MSN, ICQ, AIM etc. etc. etc.), the primary reason for skype on linux for a lot of people (the ability to see [not yet in linux skype] and talk with windows and other users) will vanish and skype will only have its call rate going for it.

I’m sure Linux support has broader implications as well when it comes to the embedded and kiosk market.

As a developer, who’s been highlighted in the skype for linux forum now, you’re probably copping a fair few posts about this stuff – I guess that’s because, for better or worse, you’re (developers) the only public face of the company to date for linux users hungry for more information.

Look forward to hearing from you when you’ve heard from your bosses on the Linux side of things.

In addition to all the cool Skype conference sessions we have going at eBay DevCon, you can also create your own Skype talk at our Monday Unconference on 6/12, and vote for other developer talks at the DevCon Conference Wiki:
