Skype for Mac blog

We like talking with you guys in the blog format. It’s been a fun ride for all involved. So we bring you the fresh shiny new Skype for Mac blog where we’ll collect anything you may want to know (and we feel like publishing) about Skype, Macs and how the two play together. Feel free to post your questions, comments or trackbacks there about anything that has to do with Mac.

This is Nils, by the way. He’s the Mac product manager running the blog. For those not so familiar with Macs, he’s not really as hot as this picture depicts, sorry :-) There’s just this software Photo Booth on Macs that you can use to mess around with your photo.

messing around with phoots may be fun, Nils, but why don’t you spend some time making skype video version available for us underprivileged mac skypers?

I second that for video skype on macs! Also, I’ve heard it’ll only be available on intel macs. Please say that’s not true! If iChat can do video on PowerPC macs, why can’t skype? Thanks

Can I third that for video Skype for Mac? Us mac users are in a corner here– either cough up £60 for the full .Mac membership (whether you want it or not) and buy an iSight camera (£100), or … don’t video call. I’ve done a bit of research and basically the only hassle-free camera to use with a Mac is the iSight. Logitech and iBot do have cameras on the market, but it sounds like they’re not worth the hassles they bring.

If I have to get an iSight then so be it. But in this media-rich world, where Macs are coming better and better equipped to set up the home user as a self-sufficient media producer/ developer, why should Mac hold all the cards for video calling?

I’d love to be able to video chat with my family (400 miles away) or friends, so would my girlfriend whose family lives in Scandinavia. I’d genuinely love to see video skype for Mac and would make a lot of use of it. I’m sure there are many others out there who would also love to see it.

Sorry about the rant but I’m DYING to see Skype video for Mac. Keep at it, development team. You’ll make a lot of mac users pretty happy for sure…

Always amazes me that MAC people seen as second class Video is possibel in Yahoo and all second partie programs but why never get any main company the act together and releases something before windows gets it

    VIDEO FOR SKYPE PLEASE

Sign me up for Video Skype too.

Having said that, jameslookma seemed to imply that one needs .Mac to be able to Video iChat. That’s NOT true. All you need to do is to get a free AIM name.

Also, I own both a FireWire iBot and an iSight. The latter is classier in its design and includes a microphone but the former does work just fine too.

Having mentioned the iBot, for some reason Skype for Windows (yes, I’m a twotimer) sees the iBot in the video preferences panel but when the test is run Skype says it can’t find the video source.

What’s up? Yes, I checked the driver. WinXP sees the iBot and MSN Messenger works just fine with it.

So, Nils, what happened, did your head explode? What’s the future for video Skype for Mac? Helloooo???

    Hi,
I am also really wondering why PC users have MSN messenger with video, Skype with video, and multiple of choises, but with my Mac “the communication and designer computer” I can’t have video conversation with my family and boyfriend hunderds of kilometers away.

I tried “aMSN”, which offeres video conversation mac-pc to hotmail addresses; it worked once, and doesn’t do it anymore.

I heard there is some Skype BETA with video, but haven’t found it anywhere?

Skype team, please horry up with the video, that’s the ONLY “cool new feature” we need right now. Please.

Yeah, you guys seriously need to develop Skype Video for Mac. You seem to be focussed on developing cross-platform technology, and with the multimedia superiority of Macs, it would make sense to extend your video capabilities to this platform. Furthermore, I think you should stop with the ‘We are working on it, but have no concrete timeline’. If you are working on it, you have a concrete timeline, but if you have no concrete timeline, you are not working on it. So which is it? This technology is phenomenal. You just need to go the one step further to make it more.

    Hey Navarsky,
    You must be a genius!

I’m trying to use an iBot with Skype on my Mac Powerbook G4 OSX 10.4 but Skype doesn’t recognise that there’s a camera attached.
How did you make it work?
