How is Skype video on Mac coming up?

I’ve got a lot of questions like this recently to all imaginable and unimaginable addresses. As has the whole of our team and support and any other channels.

> Jaanus, can you give me ANY information on video in Skype for OS-X. I’m using both platforms for various apps and my skype contacts are a mix of both.

Trust us guys, we don’t have the Mac OS X video version hidden in some secret lair from where we could take it and just publish, but we don’t as we’re evil ;) Getting it to work takes effort and we’re going ahead with that at full steam. We know you would be disappointed if it were anything less than perfect, and we do have a lot of hardcore Mac fans in the house at Skype who want to get their hands on it the same way you do. So hang in there and we’ll publish more on this as the happy day of release comes closer.

    Sounds fantastic!

  2. amargrett said 2620 days ago

Sounds great only one question will we be able to use our isight cams or will we have to have another cam that lets be honest don’t look very attractive?

  3. bbrukx said 2619 days ago

Can’t wait! I’m sure we will be able to use our iSights, right?!?

  4. hiltonblackwell said 2619 days ago

    thanks for the update!

  5. nilshammar said 2618 days ago

Yes, you’ll be able to use your beloved iSights – and hopefully many other (cheaper) cams as well

  6. cmssi_1 said 2617 days ago

Cool! Will you offer a few BETAs until the full release?

  7. nuno.loureiro said 2617 days ago

I’ve been comming to this blog for the last week to hear something like this…
I’m glad my feeling was right.. Look forward on testing a beta.

    gimme gimme gimme!!!!

  9. slapphappe said 2616 days ago

With utmost respect to Skype I strongly recommend that you consider paralell releases of functionality across all platforms. It doesn’t inspire confidence in Mac users to see you struggling to get AV working on Apple which is pretty much the International headquarters of all things audio and visual. If you can’t do it the easy way, well, need I say more …

  10. instantane said 2616 days ago

I understant that making a better version public for windows users means making it public for many users but I agree it would be very nice if new versions could be available for all platforms at the same time.

Do you have any dates about this upcoming Mac OS X video version ? Do we have to count in days, weeks, months, years ?

Anyway, nice job you’ve done til then guys, I’m sure the next version is gonna rock and understand that you take time to make it perfect.

Really looking forward to this new version of Skype for Mac!

Video for Skype for Mac will make Yahoo & MSN less important. Please speed up the process and give us what the “others” do not, compatibility across platforms

  13. landoptions said 2613 days ago

Hi Skype just join today with my brand new mac, at last a company that is doing something for all mac users worldwide. look forward to the video side for osx Thanks Paul

  14. gabriela.ienus said 2613 days ago

Video between a Mac and a PC is possible today using two iChat AV 3.0 (Mac end) and Trillian 3.1 (PC end), which is a pain to set up, the Port configuration is complicated. They support UpNp…but gee wizz. With a Mac….its supposed to “just work”.

With iChat, its a pain and “it just works” is just so much rubbish.

Skype has a chance to make it “just work”

On another subject Yahoo webcam supports non iSight webcams without addon products, but Yahoo webcam in general is appalligly slow.

Go for it skype. I am waiting for your realease.

  15. stimox said 2613 days ago

I guess I’ll just throw in my thoughts about skype-mac-video as well. It would be so much appreciated… Just imagine, the whole world videoskypeing. Peer-to-peer. No adware, no spyware. Win/Mac/Linux. So cool.

  16. kherrick said 2609 days ago

before video for skype on osx comes about, you would think you guys would fix the sound issue in the linux version. I started using skype for the sole reason that it was multi-platform voice… more and more, it seems like a windows and osx only solution! FIX IT PLEASE.

  17. spencerchipperfield said 2601 days ago

I disagree with kherrick. Get the intel iMac version of Skype Video out asap. I am heartily sick of iChatting with AIM users with their tiny pipsqueak screen images and irritating firewall issues. Skype is almost as ‘out of the box’ as the Mac. You could be the saviours of the cross-platform VC world.
It’d be good if you could avoid the VoIP issues that iChat has too!

  18. blackntan said 2598 days ago

Also looking for the beta release

  19. jerzygiergiel said 2598 days ago

Forget video, the beta out there is far too crude for even basic operations.

    Fix:

    a) sound input selection should stick not revert to internal microphone each time you start it.

    b) editable contact information.

    c) clean up the interface way too many glitches

    d) add this contact should do something for change

    etc…

    only then think about video.

  20. gueraches said 2594 days ago

No, my opinion is that the video is your primary target that many are longing for every day… I have not noticed any of the above problems. I wouldn’t have needed any of the features you have lounched in the blog, just the video conferencing from mac to pc:s. Please work hard for it!

I used “aMSN” messenger, but it doesn’t work anymore, don’t know why. Skype is my hope!

  21. nehonhx said 2591 days ago

Yes, oui, oui, en voilà une nouvelle qu’elle est bonne!!! We are waiting… THX for all SKYPE team. ;o)

  22. aletheabaril said 2582 days ago

Aaarrrghghgghgh! It’s so frustrating, my entire family is on Skype video, and I’m the only one that can’t do it, because I am on a Mac. I can’t believe that with 100 million users online, the Skype team hasn’t made it a priority. The PC version has been out forever now, come on!!!

  23. viktor_larsson said 2579 days ago

Please bring it to us soon!! And optimize it for Intel. It will be very appreciated by the OSX crowd! Kudos!

  24. henriksand said 2578 days ago

The beta has been released to a small amount of people. I wish I was one of them.. It would be nice with some new info on when the beta will be released to the public

  25. joeyslaptop said 2577 days ago

A little plugin for iChat would make me just as happy (if not happier) than having a normal SKYPE 2 for the Mac. The Skype plugin to iChat could be as simple as the following:

    A skype video-format reader/writer for Mac
A few options available on the menu bar
A nifty intigration feature with adresse book.

Or even better, why doesn’t skype make a iChat plugin for the PCs?

Oh, by the way, I love Skype out! As long as I have my laptop with me, it’s almost like having a cell phone.

  26. james_paul_morris said 2574 days ago

I’ve been at uni 3 years now, used skype for the last 2, a pc for the first 2 and just this year made the switch to mac, not going to bang on about the ‘greatnes of macs though’ they’re simply different.

Skype has made such a difference to how I communicate with my family, it just makes sense, the only real issue is my mam doesn’t like talking into a monitor. I won’t ask for a rushed version of skype with video, I’m a strong believer in “good things come to those who wait”, I’ll wait, and I’ll have faith in the techies at skype to take their time to get it right.

Go on guys, we’re all waiting, anticipating, and we don’t think you’ll dissapoint.

  27. solaris.neon said 2574 days ago

я тоже жду не дождусь когда же появится Skype Video на Mac OSX а также Linux

  28. knudsenphotography said 2573 days ago

I’m sure it’s all coming together. Don’t forget that the new Intel Mac’s also requires a lot of work to get the code over to UB.

    Keep up the good work.

  29. jsanke said 2573 days ago

Since I don’t have the cash to cough up for an Intel Mac yet, I am one of those with my 2xG4 on one side and the *ugh* Dell laptop on the other. Complicating my life even more is my noncorporate identity as an instructor teaching a European language. All the good materials are only out in Windows, and even Skype supports only video with Windows. I do a lot of distance instruction, and video chat is an invaluable aid. Because Skype’s audio is so far superior to AIM or anyone else, it’s already the channel of preference for my students and me, but when the video hits, I’ll be in halfway hog heaven (when I can run all the foreign software on my Mac, then I’ll be all the way there!)
This is already an outstanding channel, and I thank Skype. I am doing my best to be truly patient and see what marvels you all roll out!

  30. deadbunny17 said 2572 days ago

    *sobs*
ah well… looks like i’ll have to be patient… i had skype w. video on my windows pc… but windows pc’s pretty much hate and despise me… i was depressed to see that the mac version doesn’t have video yet
    anyways… please hurry it up

  31. instantane said 2571 days ago

    Latest Win version: 2.5 (May 3rd, 2006)
    Latest Mac version: 1.4 (January 10th, 2006)
Latest Linux version: 1.2 (dates depeding on install)

…do you really care for other version than the Windows one ? Not only talking about video, but it seems you’re concentrating you efforts only for Windows version. It may take time, and you may want to do things right and I agree with that. But how many people are working on Mac version versus the number of people working on the Win one ?

  32. ealingcalling said 2571 days ago

    Get a move on!!!

  33. hussein.morsy said 2570 days ago

ichat-Video is buggy and not easy to configure the firewall. I would be happy if you could release a beta soon as possible.
    Thanks

  34. ij00mini said 2570 days ago

As well as all the others, I would LOVE the addition of video to Skype, but until that time; I have had pretty goodm experience with SightSpeed (with cross platform compatibility). UNfortunately I think it is PC and Mac only, but it might get a lot of us through the dark period without Video Calls on Skype for Mac.

  35. toholio said 2568 days ago

Is it just me or did this post not tell us anything we didn’t already know, and which we haven’t already known for months? “We’re still working on it” doesn’t really count as an update in my book.

Quite honestly what’s the point of bothering with Skype on Macs at all? Adium does IM much better and iChat does voice and video (and has done for a long time).

I’m almost willing to bet money on being able to run the Windows client under virtualization before there is a useful MacOS client. At this point I wouldn’t even be shocked if the Gaim people get cross platform video support before Skype does.

  36. brycelane said 2566 days ago

Skype is good. video is good. Let’s marry the two and make the world a better place. You guys are doing great. Thanks.

  37. orangutan2005 said 2558 days ago

Good work for the mac team at Skype, Looking forwar to Video skype on mac

  38. jasprevo said 2545 days ago

Skype is a great product, but i just purchased a mac book for my wife and a mac book pro for myself and we are always on the road, so if you could quickly add video calling for Mac users i would be your best friend. I look forward to seeing the release soon.

  39. mgarlinghouse said 2542 days ago

Jaanus – It has been 11 weeks now. Any more to publish “as the happy day of release comes closer?”

  40. daveturbitt said 2536 days ago

I am another user hoping for a speedy release. I have checked for updates supporting video calls several times over the last 2 months. Estimates regarding when to check back would be greatly appreciated. It is now 12 weeks and counting since your last update on this topic.

  41. emblatame said 2531 days ago

I hope the video facilities won’t be long in coming. I was directed to this forum by Skype and thank you for that. Mac users are really cheated on MSN Messenger and also on Yahoo Messenger. Skype is wonderful and they do support the Mac platform. I hope they continue to do so and looking eagerly for the video release!!

  42. okieonawa said 2530 days ago

Please release 2.0 for MAC SOOOOOOOOON!!!! I can’t hardly wait! The sooner the better!!!!

  43. km1545 said 2527 days ago

Thank goodness you are working on this – I have an isight camera sitting on my apple monitor and right now it is completely useless – I want to video mac to PC so please get a result soon. It makes me mad that PC to PC are able to use Skype video ( very effectively) and here we are die- hard mac users feeling like the poor citizens!!!

  44. point49 said 2526 days ago

As a new Skype user, I’d love to be able to vc with people who use mac as I do with those who use windows. So many people are using both platforms now. If you want a beta tester for the mac video version, let me know! What’s the timeline for release?

  45. skbrooklyn said 2524 days ago

This is extremly frustrating…I hope skype is making this a priority……

  46. josh_in_nippon said 2517 days ago

I sent a comment asking about OS X video, which include the version of Skype I am currently using. I feel just a little insulted when I get back the canned answer that “the current version of Skype for OS X doesn’t support video” Well… no %$#&.. that’s why I asked. I know it doesn’t! I also think 12 weeks with no update and so many users clamboring for even a morsel, and PC users having had wide release, even if it is Beta for well over the last 12 weeks. Dare I say even closer to 24? What’s the hold up? is it going to be days, weeks?? Should I just keep limping with the BLECCCHHH ugly ass pokey slowe as molasses Yahoo webcam?? Talk to us!! I have plenty of Skype out usage and also two Skype in numbers. I would like to include some VC as well PLEEEEAAAASE!!!!

  47. dudelhase said 2515 days ago

Come on Guys!!! I’m travelling to Australia in 15 Days and i Need(!!!!) skype video until then! What are you doing with all your time?!

Release a Beta, just give us a hint, how long we still have to wait…
    it’s torture!!!

  48. booperkit said 2507 days ago

Skype has been really important for me and my fiance to keep in contact across the pond for several months now, but the lack of video has finally forced me elsewhere. Ichat to AOl was not an option as AOL was causing issues on the PC end. We experimented with YakforFree which messed up our systems – both PC and mac, and now we are using SightSpeed – this has a slightly inferior sound quality but otherwise works very well for video, and friends and family are moving over to this now. This is a shame because I really like Skype, but when we are promised ‘the update is coming’ for months on end, and when there are more and more rumours that skype video will only work on Intel macs, is it any surprise that people lose patience. While Video Skype for Mac has been in progress, other programs have appeared, and buggy or not, they let us ‘see’ each other – that’s all I want.
