Localization – tricky but important

I would like to share a bit of Skype statistics with you:
Only 28% of the Skype users has it set to the English language!

That means that localization is extremely important. As I have just added support for all 27 languages to the Skype Web Toolbars I thought I would share a tip:

Us the phrases that Skype already has translated for you

The Skype client contains more than 2600 phrases fully translated. Most likely a good part of your translations needs can be covered by borrowing those phrases. You can save those out to text files one by one through the Tools-Change Language-Edit Skype language file-SaveAs.

Or, if you have MS Excel, you can download a full list of all the phrases from here. I find that list extremely useful.

    I note that the downloaded file frome here:
    http://download.skype.com/share/devzone/AllLangs.zip
    contains only two phases and NOT the all the Skype lannguage file’s strings (that are 2659 for ver. 2.0.0.90). Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Hi i sell on the net http://WWW.COOLBUCKLES.COM . I have a good idea since i Speak French, English, Portuguese and Spanish. I attend all my customers in all these languages by email. My question is why can’t i have a “SKYPE voice” icon on my web site with this on it………………………………Example………………. “CALL US” …..from 9am to 2pm ……[clic for PORTUGUESE] [click for SPANISH] …..[clic for ENGLISH] ….. [clic for FRENCH] ……………………………………………………In ALL different Languages that i have chosen. Also with voice mail and a hold message that i would dictate for each language for the waiting customer on voice line. I THINK THIS IS A GREAT IDEA SINCE THE WORLD IS COMING MORE AND MORE TOGUETHER WITH THE INTERNET AND ALOT OF MULTILINGUAL BUSINESS WEB SITES WOULD ADOPT THIS SKYPE VOICE ON THEIR WEB SITE.

    @zmeypc: Wrong.

    In Excel you might want to turn off “Data > Filter > AutoFilter”…

    I am glad appreciate the importance!
    The list is ordered by language? How would you like to have it ordered?
