Skype 2.0.0.73 for Windows: DEP crashing fix

Skype 2.0.0.73 for Windows is now out. [Get it here.](http://www.skype.com/products/skype/windows/)

The detailed list of changes is in the [change log](http://www.skype.com/products/skype/windows/changelog.html). Most fixes are minor, but one deserves attention — the DEP crashing fix.

A story has been going round on this ([the original that started it](http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=148)). We know this bug affected increasingly large number of users, and we’re relieved we got it fixed now.

]]>For those digging the gory details, DEP is a Windows security technology that’s supposed to stop bad code from running on your computer. Until now, Skype may have crashed with DEP, even though there was nothing bad in it — it was simply a bug in Skype that’s now squashed.

Update, thanks to [George Ou](http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/) and others: if you had DEP enabled in hardware and DEP is enabled for all processes in Windows XP, then Skype wouldn’t work. If you added Skype to the exceptions list, it worked. But editing all these exception lists is both inconvenient and potentially unsafe (if there is ever a real bug in Skype that DEP would catch, Skype in exceptions list would override that) and as the problem was getting worse as more and more people got new AMD and Intel processors where DEP is supported in hardware, we got our act together and found and fixed the bug.

If you added Skype to some DEP exception list before this release, feel free to upgrade to 2.0.0.73 and then remove it from the exceptions list.

    Jaanus,

I’m George Ou, contributing editor of ZDNet who first broke the story http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=148. All your other links point to me as the source. Anyways, I’m very happy you fixed this issue. I’d like to point out an error in your advisory though.

“However, newer AMD and Intel processors enforce DEP in hardware, and this cannot be overriden, and until this release, Skype simply wouldn’t work on those machines”

This is not correct. Hardware-DEP has an exception list as well and it works the same as software-DEP. Skype did work on my Intel 630 w/EM64T and XD.

Again, thanks for fixing this bug. I’ve been a big fan of Skype for a long time. Here is what I wrote about it in the past:

I also have a problem wth the new version of Skype. I am running XP Pro and I am no longer able to use the keypad on my Voice CyberPhone K Voip phone. I have reinstalled the USB Voip phone software but it makes no difference. The Audio works OK and I am able to enter the telephone number via the display but I normally use the key pad. Anyone else with a similar problem?

I have exactly the same problem – I have installed the latest version but now cannot get my status to go “online”. It was all working beautifully until the new version. How do I go back?

I have just loaded the latest version on my computer running Xp Home. I have had no problems connecting and have had two individual calls and one conference between three of us from the u.k. to canada.

    Hope this helps.

I wonder if anyone has the same problem with skype that I am having. No problem connecting with a friend but after a few seconds I get cut off. This happens all the time. I am using dialup, windows xp prof, pentium 4, 2.8GHZ, and the latest version of skype. Before downloading version 2, I could communicate for up to 5 minutes before getting cut off. Any suggestions or help? Thanks

Since I installed the new version of Skype, my Cyberphone K USB handset(new in Decemeber 05)does not ring out loud for incoming calls, and the buttons on it do not work. I have to use the screen display and mouse. I have set the Voice options to VOIPvoice USB phone – any ideas?

The story about the “not working anylonger” Cyberphone counts for me as well. How can this be solved? It is quite frustrating now; alway using the mouse and (almost)not hearing the ring.

Wonder if anyone has had this problem.
I am running skype 2.0.0.69 on 1.7G lap top with intel chip.
Can use skype great while connected with LAN but if i try to use it while wireless through a Belkin router my transmit and recieve audio drops off and then i get disconnected. Its seems to disconect me when the transfere rate of the router drops below 48Mps.
    Cheers

Further to problems with Cyberphone K not working correctly since installing new version of Skype, voipvoice support has provided the following solution.

Open Skype and click TOOLS > OPTIONS > PRIVACY > Click on “Manage Other
Programs Access To Skype” from the bottom of the screen.
A window will appear headed MANAGE API ACCESS CONTROL. Please make sure
that Skype Client.exe is the only thing in this window and that it is
“allowed to use Skype”. If Skype Client.exe is not allowed to use Skype
please click on Skype Client.exe until it turns blue and then click on
the button to the right marked CHANGE.Please ensure the top option is
selected, this is ‘Allow This Program to use Skype’ and then click on OK
    and SAVE.

Next right click the Skype icon in the systray (bottom right hand corner
of the PC screen, near the clock) and choose QUIT and YES to quit Skype.
Right click the VoIPVoice Integration icon and choose EXIT.

Finally start Skype again via the following:

    START>ALL PROGRAMS>VoIPVoice Integration>VoIPVoice Integration.

Hello; Just installed the new version on my XP pro and now when I call computer to computer I get a huge amount of what sounds like water gurgles(loud) in the background. I don’t get this problem when I use it to call landlines or cell phones. Anybody else having this problem?

I am like Zoomer07601 I contact them and its just download again please. I have changed my antivirus, wiped my whole system clean and downloaded today 4th April 2009 and guess what, after one minute 17 seconds the other party was saying “I cannot hear you…” Does Skype ever read these complaints? I tried Field-Smith’s solution and it was going well until the reference to Skype Client.exe – where’s that?
