What is Skype Credit?

A short answer would be “Skype Credit is something that we made available today.” But this doesn’t really answer the question :) So read on.

First let’s look back a bit at what has been recently happening on the front of Skype paid services. In August we soft-launched an improvement that introduced US dollars to your payment options, with more currencies upcoming. Just in September, we brought you the Skype Groups Beta, so you can buy Skype services for other people.

Now we have Skype Credit.

You buy Skype Credit in amounts of 10 and 25 Euros or US dollars and then spend them how you like on Skype services and content. When you buy Skype Credit, SkypeOut will be activated immediately and you can start calling out to landlines and mobiles. So far, this sounds a lot like the SkypeOut credits that we had before. What’s new is that you can now also spend your credit balance on other Skype services, like SkypeIn, Skype Voicemail and Personalise Skype sound & pictures.

]]> What does this mean for Skype callers who already have SkypeOut credits? Don’t worry, you have the same credit balance you had before, you can just choose to spend it on more Skype services and content. Your balance still expires after 180 days of inactivity, but now you have more ways to reactivate it: you can make a quick SkypeOut call, or buy a new ringtone to personalise your Skype.

### How do I buy Skype Credit?

From within Skype, select Tools -> [Go to My Account Page](http://www.skype.com/go/myaccount), and sign in with your Skype Name and password. Then select “Buy Skype Credit” from the left-hand menu to top up your account.

We’re working on even more ways to make purchasing easier on Skype, and most of the ideas have come from you, so keep the suggestions rolling in.

Have you ever read the Shakespeare play ‘Much Ado about nothing’?
It came to mind when I was reading about SkypeCredit.
When are you going to stop these worthless announcements and do something more than 5 lines of code change?

4. reuvenbenyuhmin said 2778 days ago

Manjara, be grateful:) Why, what a world of free communication this has opened up in just two years. A vast difference for the majority of us. Kudos.

Have been trying since last Saturday to add Euro 25 to my SkypeOut account but I get no confirmation code via email. I tried this daily but nothing happens. Just to make sure there is no glitch with credit card I called my bank to verify. No, there is no problem with my credit card.

On Oct 10 I sent a message to skype HELP and received a ticket and a URL. However, when I go to that page the only comments/replies I see there are my own.

I don’t think anyone at skype actually reads those requests for ‘help’

8. incunabulist said 2776 days ago

I understand this concept of Skpe Credit: the trouble is, since it has been introduced, I seem to have lost my old SkypeOut credits, even though I had maybe 20 Euros in there. Has anyone else had this problem? I’m still waiting for the support team to get back to me to let me know where my old credits have gone.

9. franky.p said 2775 days ago

Also I tried to top up my skype-account but got no confirmation code, as the page says I got it by Email. So I asked at the support but no answer, no code, nothing …

Since skype got sold to ebay nothing works anymore as we use to know from skype. Its a shame that this great programm/system get messed up now by the money makers of ebay.

They just let their custommers stay in the rain. Pitty!

It seems many are having the same problems. I have paid my money and am showing 12 EURO credit skype says I must have skype credit to make a local phone call. Very disapointing.
Skype now have a very unhappy customer. I dont intend to reccomend skype to any one from now on. Perhaps if enough people boycot skype they may fix the problem. Any tips on fixing this will be appreciated.

Today I increased my account balance, and nothing. I can’t make any call by SkypeOut. I have the same message as riverlet1497( must have skype credit to make a local phone call.). I’m very unhappy. Please help me!

13. medziak said 2774 days ago

Providers sent me this letter:
“Hello,

We are currently experiencing a technical problems activating credits that have been recently purchased. The credit appears on your balance but calling out is not possible. We have identified the issue and hope to have it resolved shortly.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Regards,
Andres”

When did you send your request to Skype?

Just wonders how long I’ll have to wait …

/Dan

15. medziak said 2774 days ago

I wrote to them at 11 a.m.(today) and get the answer at 1:15 p.m. But “unfortunately” my SkypeOut doesn’t work yet…

16. chiribogart said 2774 days ago

same problem as riverlett here, anyone have any idea when our skype credits are gonna work, should I just ask for a refund???

17. produde_gr said 2773 days ago

same problem again. i “was lucky” : i got about 2 euro as a voutcher, but was disaponinted to see the blody “you need skype credit – buy more ” message when at the same time it shows that I have the credit… luckily I did not buy more credit to find out that this does not work either.
I think it’s a shame no to inform people on this site like having a banner saying “We are experiencing technical difficulties blah blah”.
Well lets wait and see…

How can I change the currency for Skype Group?

19. jzsiros said 2770 days ago

I recently bought a SKype out number and was given 120 free minutes because I payed using paypal. I used the credit and tried to purchase more but it won’t let me saying I can only make a purchase once at a time because I’m a new customer. However, that purchase was 3 weeks ago! I submitted a request for support and have heard nothing- no reply except the automatic one when you submit. It is very difficult to rely on a phone service like this, especially when no one is willing to help.

20. philippe-raes said 2769 days ago

Since the recent change in the credit handling, I have tried to buy more credit for skype-out. For the first time Skype would send a code to my mailbox, to be used before buying the credit. I have realised that in the past I have made an error in typing my e-mail address.
When I try to change the e-mail address using the standard procedure, the system seems to have accepted the change but in fact it does not.
What can I do to change my e-mail address in order to receive the code from Skype?

21. maxonskp said 2718 days ago

I lost my credit due to the unbelievable skype conditions! I didn’t read the terms, and this is my fault obviously, but I haven’t received any alert, mail , nothing announcing that my credit was going to expire soon, this is stealing money from people!! It was just a bit more than 9 euro, and this is why I’m not going even to write to them, and this is probably the reason they steal money.
No more skypeout for me, I’m going to use my ISP VOIP services.

22. kulkas3pintu said 2717 days ago

I’m having the same problem as many of you…I have bought 10 dollars of skypecredit, but when I try to make a skypeout call, I see a message saying that I have to have credit to make such a call….even though the 10 dollar credit appears right on the display!!!

Anyone figure out how to resolve this?

Very disappointed.

23. chaosred said 2717 days ago

Brought credit today in the sum of 10Euros but when I try to dial out Skype says that I have no credit. What the hell is going on?

24. daenchen5353 said 2717 days ago

I tried also to dial out with skype.
I bought the credit of ten Euros, and its in my account.
And when I try to call out, it is written that I dont have credit. What a hell are they trying to do? Anyone out there with an idea or solution!
I buy for calling and not for having a bullshit like this…

25. anagomezgonzalez said 2716 days ago

Funny how there were no glitches in taking credit card payments!

27. daenchen5353 said 2716 days ago

I wrote yesterday a support request.
So they fixed my problem until today.
There is still written that I should activate skypeout but its working now. For all the people with the same problem. Support request to the billing department.
Good luck! And I hope my skypeOut is working from now on without this problems.

28. matjaz_sivic said 2713 days ago

Why can’t I buy with credit card anymore????? It is the easiest way to do.
What the hell is this kind of payment you have now????

29. tommo184 said 2663 days ago

Same here, I’ve a business account and a personal account. Business account shows zero balance (after 2 weeks) and personal balance shows £5 – but when I try to SkypeOut it says I need to credit my account. Skype Support don’t seem to exist – they never reply. that’s £12 they’ve stole off me now. Not impressed..perhaps a call to Watchdog or Trading Standards is required!

30. h.h.hansen said 2382 days ago

Currency trouble. HINT for those of you who have currency problems. Examples: Living (with computer) in country A, working and banking in country B. Or if you have just set currency to something different than the one of your credit card account. This took me 3 weeks to find out: Visit http://www.skype.com/go/myaccount , then login and change the currency. Otherwise, the currency gets stuck! Good luck. And shame on Skype for not making currency change available in the Profile Update.

Can I buy LESS than 10 euros?

33. jenny_____ said 1957 days ago

Did Skype really sell out to Ebay?
Anyway, I can’t believe how much they’ve went up! When I started using skype (2006) I paid $38.00 for a year. NOW, I just had to pay again and it’s now $60.00 for a year! PLUS now it’s saying I need to buy more skype credit?? That’ll be 70 a year! Come on Skype! Keep it cheap like it was in the beginning, when I was recommending it EVERYONE I saw!
So since the end of 2006, I’m paying $32.00 more per year. Not a bad increase, but not good either. Hopefully Skype wont start trying to compete with landline phone companys!
Still don’t see why I have to have “Skype Credit” when I’m only using it for local #’s. I’m not calling outside the US.

Hi All
Can anyone of you give me a link or any way of contacting Skype to report my problem? I actually bought SkypeOut credit for 10 Pounds through Paypal. Confirmation of payment has been sent to my email-box. Problem is, No credit appears on my Skype window, hence I can’t make any skype-out calls. I have searched through their website for a ContactUs link, but I couldn’t find any. Should I contact Skype or Paypal? How?

I purchased a Skype credit by mistake of $14.00. How do I get my payment that was made through PayPal refunded. I’ll never use a credit of that amount. I just want a monthly US/Canada subscription.

I have had no problems using SkypeOut. I have not yet purchased Skype Credit, but I signed up for a plan where I pay only $2.95 a month for unlimited calls all over the US and Canada. It is amazing that I can make as many calls as I want for so cheap. I have been paying ten cents a minute for calls on my prepaid phone! I have not yet purchased a Skype number for incoming calls, but I’ve been using my cell phone as a pager, so when someone calls me, I call them back on my Skype phone. I would like to purchase Skype Credit so that I can text message friends, and I pay 5 cents a text through my cell carrier, so it would be cheaper to send them through Skype. I don’t want to buy $10, though. I only need a few dollars here and there, and I don’t understand why I can’t just pay for the text messages as I go. Anyone know if theres a way to buy less than $10 in credit?
