> The [KatrinaHelp Wiki Network](http://katrinahelp.info/) was initially conceived in many different people’s minds at approximately the same time worldwide. It represents a clear and direct effort at helping coordination, communication, and cooperation for rescue, recovery, and relief efforts. In conjunction with Skype, SkypeJournal and [Khaos Labs](http://www.khaoslabs.com/), they have set up a messaging centre using Skype and its API.
We helped with some SkypeOut credit. If you can provide help to the hurricane victims, [Red Cross is accepting donations](https://www.redcross.org/donate/redir.asp?OID=Skype&DID=09022005).
**UPDATE:** here’s an e-mail we got from a Skype user. We’re glad we could be of help!
> I have two homes in the U.S. One in northern Michigan (where we spend the summers) and one in NEW ORLEANS, home of Katrina. Our grown children are in New Orleans and we are currently in Michigan. It has been impossible to contact the children on regular phone lines, due the disruptions Katrina has caused. Sometimes we were able to make contact on Skype when all other attempts failed. We are very appreciative of the service Skype has given us in this difficult period. THANK YOU
With all this discussion about Skype, why isn’t anyone advising users and techs alike about one of THE worst features I have ever seen, and many if not most users are seeing.
At least with the Windows version, and other users say that this is the same on other O/S Skype versions:
Whenever Skype is accessing the network, as in initial program opening, sending or receiving Skype text, and at many points when sending or receiving Skype file transfer, the users PC totally stops functioning — CPU processing for ALL other events stops, while Skype continues onward for that time period.
Somebody is clearly kidding users, and manifold Email’s and even Skype phone / audio calls to their Euro HQ have gone unanswered for over four months now. This “feature” has been seen in Skype ever since its inception, and continues to this day.
Obrigada.

Hello Skype family,
Thanks a million for making it possible for the unreached to be reached. At my workplace in Akassa Island near the Atlantic Ocean in South South part of Nigeria, my phone never rung due to the disruptions caused by the Climatic condition of that zone. But on skpe, I can hear the voices of my loved ones and share online information together. Bravo to a unique family. Best regards. Isaac
Hello Skype,
Can someone from your company contact us.
We have a Wiki on Katrina (Project Back Pack) and it’s currently receiving lots of attention from CNN, BusinessWeek, Times Magazine, and the White House.
We use Skype daily and we have lots of ideas where Skype could play an even more central role in the Katrina-relief efforts.
