Announcing Skype for PPC 1.2 – Beta Version

Today we are sharing the all-new Skype for Windows Mobile Pocket PC v1.2 – Beta.

Skype for Pocket PC provides you with the freedom to enjoy Skype on the go: in the home, office or outdoors – wherever there is a high speed data network (WiFi, 3G or EDGE) which your Pocket PC can connect to. So, find your favorite WiFi hot spot and Skype away. If you get an EDGE or 3G enabled Pocket PC with a high speed data plan, you can really start going places, while talking to your buddies for free.

Version 1.2 offers the ability to make Skype to Skype calls, Skype Out calls, instant message chats and to send and receive voicemail. We also worked hard to provide good voice quality. Supported languages now include: English, German, French, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Italian and Spanish.

For the best sound quality we recommend you use earphones, a device with a CPU of at least 300MHz as well as built-in WiFi. If you don’t plan to use earphones, we recommend you turn on the ‘echo cancellation’ in the Skype application (You can do that under Tools / Options in the Skype PPC application). If you plan to use an external WiFi card, your devices should have at least a 400MHz CPU.

You can start using it today but remember, this is still an evaluation version and hence it is not perfect, yet. Just download the following file to your Windows desktop or laptop: [http://www.skype.com/go/mobile](http://www.skype.com/go/mobile) Note: Do NOT download this file directly to your Pocket PC, as it will not be recognized. Rather download it to your desktop or laptop computer and then use ActiveSync to transfer it to your Pocket PC.

Please share with us your comments on voice quality, ease of use, places you enjoy using Skype on your Pocket PC and what exact device you are using it on. Just post your comments here or on the Pocket PC forum at: http://forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?t=33354

Thanks for helping us make a better product for you!

I use PSGw in the office with H.323 IPPBX and use same SoftPhone to accept/place all calls. Great!

Tried to run the product on a Windows 2000 machine acting as a gateway between Skype and Asterisk – doesn’t work. Humongous memory consumption (memory leak?) after some time resident. Definite dissapointment as far as using with Asterisk. Would love to be proven wrong, since I need the functionality.

Well.. the only and most important thing has yet to have been resloved. People (including myslef) still can’t hear the other side talking (even with the echo123 test) while using the Jabra Bluetooth headset..

I guess we’ll have to wait a loooong time till this gets resolved… since it has been the problem for several of Skype’s PPC versions and nothing has been done about it.

Please try to make a version that will work on a 300Mhz PPC.

I have a Ipaq with CPU of 260MHz and Skype work pretty well when I am conected in a hot spot. I got to talk and chat. It is the old version. I am afraid that if I upgrade it stop working. Can one donwload the old version as well?

  8. teller said 2819 days ago

aloyolac – you can try out the new beta and if you’re not happy then download the current official release from http://www.skype.com/products/skype/pocketpc/ (version 1.1.0.6).

I wish there was somewhere else I could post this because this comment isnt really a comment on the article just a feature request. Since skype already has deals with local telco’s to supply them with “normal” phone numbers, i was thinking, would it be possible for skype to use this contract to make a fax-service available???? i would love to be able to use a virtual fax that sends me the fax per PDF and allows me to send straight from my computer…..

    What do you think?

Skype 1.2 beta PPC soft: use an ACER N35 PDA + windows 2003 OS. Will I still be able to use this soft with an external Wi-Fi card? I read comments here that 260 Mhz give good results. Mine is 266Mhz and should work? Anyone to help? Thanks.

Is there any chance that there will be a Symbian version of Skype? Last I heard there were way more Symbian phones than Windows ones.

  12. usayd1 said 2816 days ago

Thanks for that, i’ve been waiting for ages for an update to the Skype PPC Edition. Why don’t you make some more aesthetic improvements like user display picts and stuff thats availiable on the pc version.

  13. eeg123456 said 2815 days ago

Fine but, when does Skype release an API for 2003SE ou WM5.0???

  14. tony.svanstrom said 2813 days ago

I REALLY would like the CAB-files instead of .exe-ones…

The easiest way for me to install files on my ipaq is to download them directly to it, or to just use BT or WLAN to transfer them; using .exe-files is a serious PITA.

  15. tony.svanstrom said 2813 days ago

Ok, I’ve tried the usual ways to extract CAB-files on MacOS X, but there doesn’t seem to be a CAB-file in that .exe…

Now what? Do I really have to spend hours installing Virtual PC and Windows, or visit a friend with a WinPC, to install this one?

    hi All… I´m Brazilian… Skype me Ok

    thx

  17. kouszjp said 2811 days ago

I bought the product for using as a bridge from skype to asterisk (i need only this direction). But it doesn’t work! The sound quality is very bad! Does someone know another product? I will report here again if the product works.

  18. pauoliva said 2810 days ago

You should publish CAB files for pocket PC, not windows EXE.

For some of us (linux & mac users) is a pain having to install Activesync and pda software into someone else’s computer just to be able to install skype on our pocket pc.

I use E-TEN M600 Pocket PC Phone build in WiFi and Windows Mobile 5.0. The Skype 1.2 beta working fine except I cannot get Text message from other side. I think it’s the bug for Skype 1.2 beta.

  21. glorincz said 2804 days ago

I could not make it run on XP. It not only failed to function, but stopped with an error message (“Feedback driver not installed”). There was no documentation or explanation about this kind of problem.

  22. marcogpi said 2803 days ago

A couple of software iterations later, and apparently using new SIP software, PSGw works for me in terms of bridging the Skype to SIP gap (and vice versa). Once the version 2 release is available to all users I would recommend it for people that want to open up an Asterisk-based telephone system with Skype. Our set up will connect incoming Skype calls to an operator, from where they are connected to the intended individual – thereby eliminating the need to have Skype on every desktop and the need for people to keep track of their phones and their Skype applications. It’s a shame there’s no way to handle multiple incoming calls, but that’s a Skype issue, not a PSGw issue.

I just got the new T-mobile MDA Pro (HTC Universal) with Windows Mobile 5.0 and unfortunately neither the old beta nor the new version Skype PPC 1.2 won’t work. The software installs but after clicking the Skype icon NOTHING happens. Anybody out there, how got Skype to work on a MDA Pro?

  24. danlevyk said 2786 days ago

Hard Reset every time, both versions (Official + Beta).

With the Beta I was able to login, call (SkypeOut) a contact, etc. After a 5 minutes’ use the screen hung, and a Soft Reset wouldn’t work. Had to Hard Reset my i-mate ii.

    I don’t like it.

I setup call forwarding to 1800 number, so now i have skype bridge to Asterisk PBX.

very simple, no software, no hardware just setup.

Surprised not to read anything on Skype for Windows Mobile 5.0. When will it be available? – Everybody using Windows Mobile 5.0 tells me not to touch the current beta of skype for ppc, as it would hang the device.

So please skype, tell me when will you be available for Windows Mobile 5.0?

I tried to install Skype for Pocket PC 1.1.0.6 or 1.2 beta version on my Motorola MPx220 Smartphone, unfortunately the installation failed on both versions. Is there a release coming up, supporting Smartphones over GPRS connection?

  29. maquinzi said 2782 days ago

Sorry, forgot to mention that my Motorola MPx220 is running Windows Mobile 2003 SE

Why Skype does not work on PPC con CPU lower than 400MHz?… I understand the soft/applic may be slower, but why this limit?
    Which is the technical reason?
Does anyine use Skype on a PPC which has lower CPU speed, and experienced problems?

    Thanks

    Chris

I did install this 1.2 beta successfully in my Dopod 900 PocketPC Phone (Windows Mobile 5.0) without problems. but the official version didn’t work out. but there was no options at this version’s skype for pocketpc to let me choose to use the loud speaker or the phone’s speaker, it would be nice if there is this kind of option for pocketpc phone, since now most 3G phones all have dual speakers.

  32. andrew.scott.baker said 2756 days ago

What sort of delay are people experiencing? I’ve got a HTC Universal running WM2005 and the delay is almost a second making Skype unusable. Is this common?

  33. andrew.scott.baker said 2753 days ago

Nitzan – I didn’t get any feedback to my comment about audio delay and I can’t see anything on the forums. Am I alone in having this problem?

  34. bjaspers said 2734 days ago

can not install on Qtek 9100, with WM5 I do see a Skype icon in my programs tab, but it does not start of? can’t the program in the “to be removed programs” listing either… whassup?

  35. kim.wiio said 2732 days ago

Thank you for the beta 1.2. I have it installed in a (HTC) Qtek 9100 where it works much better than the official version.
However, perhaps because of the slow processor, there is a lot of errors while talking (delays and cuts mostly).
The best result is reached when all the other applications are killed.
All the best for the developing team – you are doing a good work!

I found out Skype for PPC v 1.2 can’t be install in Microsoft AKU 2.0. When the offical version will be released?

  37. gravesen said 2727 days ago

I’ve tried to install on a Qtek 9100 with WM2005. Doesn’t work – says the CAB install was unsuccessfull. Any ideas why and/or what to do?

Just loaded version on a MDA pro (TMobile) but it dont work.
One the setup is succesfull but when i click it does not load skype..
Any solutions? The processor is 520MHz and RAM is 64mb.

Has anyone tried skype through 3G?

  39. wiroth.net said 2719 days ago

This version is a bit more usable on qtek 9100/k-jam etc…, cpu usage is still very high, but at least it works. All previous version were unusable because of the cpu usage.
It still needs “better” cpu optimisation for omap processors to make it somewhat production ready for the OMAPs.

MDA PRO Issue: Same here! Installed Skype on my MDA Pro (T-Mobile), but it never fires up. Does not even show in the Programs Running list!

Has anyone heard or figured out a solution for this issue? Maybe the older Beta Version?
