Come participate in Skype research groups!

Our user research people are putting together research groups that help us better understand who you, our users are and what you expect of Skype. Which services and initiatives interest you, which don’t, which areas we can improve… that kind of thing.

We are conducting the groups at our office in central London. So if you are close to London and would like to be involved, we would value your help. As a thanks for your contribution, we’ll be giving you vouchers for SkypeIn, SkypeOut, Skype Voicemail and a bunch of other stuff.

If you’re interested in participating, e-mail research ‘at’ skype.net and let us know. The groups meet over the next couple of weeks, so be quick.

Why is it that I receive each RSS news item from share Skype at least 3 times? It’s happening consistently and is extremely annoying.

  5. dreamdrummer said 2844 days ago

Adam, which RSS reader are you using? The ones we’ve tested with all seem to work OK.

  6. adam.schwabe said 2844 days ago

NetNewsWire on OS X. This is the third time this post has appeared in the feed, and it appears no modifications were made (which can make it reappear). Is it possible that comments are triggering a republish?

    Hi,

Why not Paris or Biarritz ? In France, ours cities are very beautyful and the sun always here!

Please fix your RSS generator. I use Bloglines to read my feeds, and your posts appear over and over; this one in particular has been appearing several times per day since it was published (another one was the one about the icons exhibition). This is the sort of stuff that makes people want to unsubscribe, so please fix it ASAP!!!

I suspect the problem is related to comments. A post should *not* reappear in a feed every time a new comment is posted.

please organise this in the Netherlands too…

I´m wondering why this kind of research can´t be done through skype. Why just people close to London can get involved? After all, isn´t skype trying to make people communicate wherever they may be?

    Re: Rss Problems.

I designed the rss generation for blogs.skype.com – If an article is edited and the text is modified or the title changed (To correct spelling for example) rss readers will reshow that article as a new article. This is normal, even the BBC News Rss feed does this!

  12. prazgod said 2843 days ago

    Re: Rss problems (2)

The generation of the rss feed has *nothing* to do with comments, and the feed is *not* generated everytime a new comment is created.

  13. jrothlis said 2842 days ago

    Hi Phil,

There is definitely something wrong with the generator, unless someone is purposely editing the post to make it continuously reappear in people’s feeds. I have received this particular post in my feed multiple times per day, every single day since it was originally posted.

Have you actually created a bloglines account and tested for yourself? That is what I as the developer would’ve done by now. Note that I am not the only person to take the time to report it. I don’t mean any disrespect to you, but by telling me that you developed it etc. you are implying that I am wrong, that I am making this stuff up, which is disrespectful to me.

  14. adam.schwabe said 2842 days ago

It’s still appearing for me constantly in NetNewsWire as well.

  15. skullyfm said 2841 days ago

I found where the problem is.
It’s because of the email protection in the source code. In order to protect research(at)skype(dot)net they used some random javascript variables. It means that each time the page is reloaded (and also the feed) the content is different.
20 minutes ago the variable was “addy76741″ and now it’s “addy6906″.
Since the content is different, our RSS readers just show us a new post.
    Hope this helps…

  16. patrickstrang said 2839 days ago

Please, pretty please with sugar on top: could you get rid of the javascript in this post. It’s annoying to _always_ see this post as updated in bloglines. Just write research[at]skype.net instead or something that doesn’t involve random variables in the script…

  17. skullyfm said 2838 days ago

Guys, if you don’t read comments just turn them off… It’s really boring to give you some tips and not to be listened at. Since 7 days I received this post at least 30 or 50 times. I think I’ll do like the others and unsubscribe from your blog since I cannot turn off the “show modified as New” option in my reader like Mollyfud adviced it.

  18. mollyfud said 2838 days ago

Just for interest sakes, still Getting the post (even with Don’t show modified as new). Is there anything you can do at your end to fix this? I might have to unsubscibe and I don’t really want to do that.

    TIA
    Molly

  19. terminuz said 2837 days ago

guys – thanks for your observations. It appears that indeed the e-mail cloaking feature is causing the annoyance. We have disabled it for the time being and you should no longer get the post reappearing.

  20. firstilers said 2837 days ago

I’m looking to see if it would be possible in a near futur to redirect my call_in to my mobile phone. That would be great for my company since we are most of the time on the move.

  21. leko-baculak said 2837 days ago

Hi there, I am not interested in participating actively in the research group BUT I do have an idea: can you please post the statistics for hourly usage over a day. Perhaps you can average it over a week, or whatever, but I would love to know what times of the day I can expect traffic to be ‘light’ and when I can expect it to be ‘heavy’. Perhaps you can call it ‘Skype Traffic Report’. It would help me manage my time in terms of when to call people…sometimes the line is beautiful and clear, other times its simply jammed. I am sure there would be times when this wouldn’t help, but there must be an ‘offpeak’ time!! ThanQ!! P.S. Truly is a great little thang, this Skype!

Been a happy user for last 8 months or so but recently find calls suddenly being disconnected rquiring redialing & same thing happening after a few minutes. Also converation delay is getting worse making for vey disjointed conversations. Your USB phone fixed echo problems & yes as an Australian subscriber would like to participate in your new research group.

    My comment is on Databases.

I have started to use Skype and find it to be better than a telephone but it needs some tuning up.

    Databases.
Businesses are run on them, they are the key to work and “life as we know it Jim”.

Your current database is good place to start from but most professional companies develop say “Access” to give them what they want. Internet Explorer has the old CSV which can be managed through Access. It means that I can sort the persons name or e-mail address alphbetically.

    I welcome your comments.

Have you got forum so that we tell you what we think?

    What is the address?

Skype makes the voip world go round and it hold the peace!
It`s really important that skype dont know: skin colors , religions, or other doubtful “differences”..!

I have to smile when i read something about s-killers

SKYPE `rocks through the world wild web and millions of skypers appreciate it!
    Peace & good skype 4all..! C.

i think it would be a great idea to be able to buy skypeout gift voucher (using codes) for christmas or birthday presents etc.

  34. richardduke said 2786 days ago

could we have category/group like personal, business so that it is easier to find the correct number or even better where we can create group.

the other idea i have is to be able to import name and telephone number form Access or CSV file instead of just outlook.

also love to have the feature of export the list to either csv or access so we can make changes like name all at once instead of one by one.

I started to use skype today, and on my first usage i have notice that the sound quality is not very good. Sometimes the conversation its interrupted, its a detail on a project that is so big (connect everyone)!

I will continue exploring skype until a better software apears…I’m joking

  38. admiral.encode said 2673 days ago

Skype is so good, we use it for sending reports back to base from a laptop in any wifi area. It beats isdn in both quality and simplicity.
We have now built a reporter kit that works – without trouble.
